Olympic College is continuously recruiting English Adjunct Faculty (part-time) to primarily teach composition and research courses at its Bremerton Campus. Olympic College seeks applicants who are dedicated to student-centered learning, closing achievement gaps, supporting diversity and social justice learning opportunities, and who employ data-informed decision-making in their instruction.
Essential Functions- Teach primarily English composition course(s) in accordance with the college catalog, use agreed-upon course outlines, develop course syllabi in alignment with English 101, 102, and/or 235 Student Learning Outcomes, and departmental guidelines.
- Teach day and evening classes in person; some may be located on the branch campuses of Poulsbo and Shelton.
- May also include teaching accelerated composition courses in the industrial learning program at PSNS (Puget Sound Naval Shipyard); base access is required. These sections run on an intensive schedule (two weeks of intensive instruction, two weeks off, then two more weeks of intensive instruction) equivalent to an 11-week quarter-length course at the main or branch campuses.
- Teach in person and/or hybrid composition courses.
- Provideclasssyllabitostudentsenrolledinclassesbythe?rstdayandtothedivision of?ce by the 10th day of each quarter.
- Contribute to English Assessment efforts as needed.
- Respond to students' queries in a timely fashion.
- Identify individual learning needs of students and make appropriate adjustments in learning environments and activities to meet those needs;
- Punctually communicate with students, faculty, staff, and administrators;
- Perform other related duties as assigned and/or required.
Teaching Modality:
At the time of hire, adjunct faculty typically do not teach asynchronous (fully online) courses; new adjuncts are generally assigned in-person and hybrid sections. Teaching in this modality may become a possibility in the future.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Master's degree (MA) in English from an accredited college or university
- College teaching experience
- Must be available to teach during the day and in person
- Experience teaching Developmental Composition
- Experience teaching Technical Writing
- Interest in teaching in an accelerated industrial learning program at PSNS.
- MFA or PhD in English
- Deliver instructional course content with excitement and enthusiasm;
- Use a variety of methods and modes of instruction to ensure student success;
- Demonstrate a commitment to teaching students with little or no background, as well as the experienced student desiring to further their career;
- Utilize a variety of assessment activities to evaluate student learning and achievement;
- Demonstrate success working with individuals and groups representing a wide range of diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds as well as military veterans;
- Support diversity in higher education through application of culturally responsive teaching pedagogies and the use of diverse resources/voice, as well as by contributing through actions;
- Foster a climate of multi-cultural understanding and appreciation;
- Demonstrate an understanding of and commitment to the Olympic College mission, diversity, and a learning-centered climate;
- Demonstrate success incorporating accessibility and special needs accommodations via course materials and classroom activities;
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing in the classroom and with other professionals to maintain effective and positive working relationships;
