JOB DESCRIPTION – Certified Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA)
GENERAL DESCRIPTION
The Certified Speech Language Pathology Assistant (SLPA) is an individual who has received an Associate degree as a certified Speech Language Pathology Assistant from an approved school.
Alternatively, the individual may possess a Bachelor’s degree in the field of Communication Disorders or Speech Language Pathology from an approved school.
The SLPA is a skilled, technical worker who performs speech language therapy and related duties as assigned by the school district Speech Language Pathologist.
The work is carried out under the direction of the Speech Language Pathologist to whom the employee is responsible.
Reports to and evaluated by:
Supervisor of Special Education or Designee
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Follow documented treatment plans or protocols developed by the supervising Speech-Language Pathologist
- Document student performance (e.g., tallying data for the Speech Language Pathologist to use; preparing charts, records, and graphs) and report this information to the supervising Speech Language Pathologist
- Assist the Speech Language Pathologist during assessment of students.
- Assist with clerical duties such as preparing materials and scheduling activities as directed by the Speech Language Pathologist
- Constructs materials for students; modifies materials as necessary and as directed by the speech language therapist.
- Provides therapy support in classroom as appropriate
- Perform checks and maintenance of equipment
- Collect data for monitoring quality improvement
- Attends departmental, building, and IEP meetings as appropriate
- Performs related duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS
- Knowledge of developmental milestones and general children’s development.
- Work with students with communication, learning, behavioral and/or physical handicaps required
- Demonstrated knowledge of grammar and English usage
- Ability to articulate clearly and possess effective written and oral communication skills
- Demonstrate positive relationship skills with students, parents and colleagues
- Ability to maintain program records and organize materials
- Maintains confidentiality
- Follows directions and can work independently or with a team
- Ability to set priorities and meet deadlines
- Able to complete activities that support compliance with Federal, State and local mandates
- Maintain effective working relationships with staffand parents
