ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND PURPOSE

The Shipfitters are responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality and in a professional manner.

POSITION DEMANDS (Education/Training/Experience)
  • High School diploma or equivalent education.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience working on ships.
  • Must have dependable transportation.
  • Access to local bases.
  • Must know all of the 1st and 2nd class Ship fitter requirements.
  • Must be able to safely operate a torch and plasma in all positions.
  • Must be able to bevel plate edges and TAOs using the correct joint design.
  • Must be able to complete work with little to no guidance from a supervisor.
  • Basic knowledge of standard items is required.
  • Basic knowledge of shop equipment is required.
  • Must have knowledge of WAFs.
  • Must be able to read and interpret NAVSEA drawing and blueprints.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Physical requirements include carrying, lifting, walking, climbing, crawling, sitting, crouching, standing, stooping, kneeling, talking, hearing, and additional visual requirements. Must be able to pass a Standard Jaeger's Test chart for near vision acuity reading J1 letters or equivalent with or without corrective aids and pass a color vision test using Ishihara's Tests for Color Deficiency.

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS

This position develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other Shipfitters and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.

PRINCIPAL RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assures that tank/compartment has an updated safe for hot work ticket and the requirements of the ticket have been met (e.g., ventilation, lighting, safety equipment).
  • Assures that conditions of the tank/compartment have not changed since the ticket was written (e.g., fuel run back, unsafe working conditions).
  • Assures that a Work Authorization Form (WAF) ticket is on the job site and that it is for the specific job being accomplished; no work will be accomplished without a WAF posted at the location of repairs.
  • Assures that any other safety issues are complied with that relate to the specific job being accomplished (e.g., special staging, face shields for grinding, protective clothing for hot work related jobs, breathing apparatus with correct cartridges).
  • Assures that you are trained or qualified for the work you are assigned to do (e.g., JLG, forklift, welding, brazing, special electrical/mechanical repairs).
  • Assures that you and personnel working under your direction are working as safely and productively as possible while maintaining quality control at all times.
  • Assures that the job site is left in a safe and clean condition prior to departure.
  • Assures that personnel have work package and the necessary drawings, technical manuals, or specifications required for them to adequately accomplish their work assignments.
ACCOUNTABILITY

This position reports to Ship fitter Crew Leader, Foreman and General Foreman. Responsible for effective, efficient and safe accomplishment of all assigned tasks.

UNIQUE/ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Regular, reliable attendance on-site is an essential function of the job. Weekend work and/or extended hours may be required. Must be able to access all work locations, including government and private shipyards and/or vessels.

PAY RANGE

Pay $29.71 – $39.00

BENEFITS

Medicare, dental, vision, basic and supplemental life insurance, paid vacation, seven paid holidays, one personal day per year, 401(k) retirement plan with 6% match on 6% enrollment, tuition and training reimbursement.
