Position Summary

The Director of Nursing is a full‑time administrative leader responsible for the delivery of nursing services, staff management, policy development, and compliance with all applicable laws and regulations. The Director reports directly to the Administrator and works collaboratively with other departments, external agencies, and governing bodies to ensure the highest quality care for residents.

Core Responsibilities
  • Assist in developing, maintaining, and enforcing nursing policies and procedures that reflect professional standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate and interpret policies and procedures to nursing staff and monitor practice for effective implementation.
  • Review the 24‑hour unit reports daily to ensure timely, effective responses to significant changes in resident conditions, and investigate any concerns such as restraints, injuries, abuse, medication errors, loss of property, or resident/family dissatisfaction.
  • Communicate directly with residents, families, medical staff, nursing staff, interdisciplinary team members, and Department Heads to coordinate care, improve implementation of care plans, and maintain a homelike environment.
  • Establish and implement an infection control program, review surveillance reports to identify trends, and incorporate findings into the Quality Assessment and Assurance Committee report.
  • Monitor resident care on all shifts, evaluate regulatory compliance through daily rounds and staff interviews, and design actions to improve quality.
  • Participate in monthly Medicare Triple Check to ensure accurate billing and documentation.
  • Conduct quality assessment and assurance activities, gather and analyze data for trends, and institute corrective actions promptly.
  • Supervise the development and delivery of in‑service education programs to build nursing staff competence.
  • Assist the Administrator in preparation for long‑term care surveys, direct staff during surveys, and develop responses to findings.
  • Collaborate with physicians, consultants, facility agencies, and institutions to improve quality and resolve identified problems.
  • Consult with the Administrator daily regarding resident status, census, budget, personnel, and other relevant issues.
  • Participate in the development of the nursing department budget and provide financial information regarding departmental needs and status.
  • Oversee the admission process: review and approve admissions, assess acuity impact, and monitor staffing needs.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with hospital discharge planners to facilitate admissions and maintain census.
  • Determine Medicare/PPS eligibility, manage case‑management documentation, and ensure the integrity of Medicare reimbursements.
  • Develop staffing plans that ensure sufficient qualified nursing staff to meet direct‑care needs and regulatory compliance.
  • Recruit, interview, evaluate, and retain qualified nursing staff; conduct performance reviews and appropriate personnel actions.
  • Ensure 24‑hour availability as a nursing administration resource through on‑call or delegated nursing staff.
  • Maintain current skills and knowledge via continuing education and apply that knowledge to job responsibilities.
