ST. VINCENT DE PAUL JOB DESCRIPTION FOR RECEIVER Introduction

The Society for St. Vincent de Paul, as founded by Fredrick Ozanam, is an international Catholic organization of lay persons whose purpose is to help the less fortunate through person-to-person contact with those in need of spiritual or material assistance. The Thrift Store and Furniture Annex serve as the structure to support those in our community by offering low cost clothing and other household items.

The incumbent of this job description reports directly to the Lead Worker of the Receiving Department. Any questions regarding this job description will be referred to the Store Manager or Assistant Manager for clarification.

Job Requirements and Qualifications Summary Primary Role

A receiver’s primary role is to assist customers as they bring in donations and support the sorting area. Duties include, but are not limited to, receiving incoming donations, bagging and boxing donations, loading sorting bench, assisting the driver with donation pick-ups, general support to the sorting room and store janitorial services.

Cross-Training

Receivers will be cross-trained in other store functions, including cashiering, general sorting, clothing sorting, and other departments as needed, to provide operational support and maintain flexibility in staffing.

Assisting in Other Store Areas

Assisting in other areas of the store as directed by management based on operational needs.

Experience

Basic receiving skills are preferred but not required.

Training

St. Vincent de Paul will provide in-depth training for new receivers on proper receiving techniques as well as proper storage and loading procedures. The incumbent will also learn store policies and procedures during the probationary period

Responsibilities
  • Accepting donations.
  • Storing and stacking boxes and bags.
  • Accompany the truck driver on donation pickups and assist with loading and unloading items.
  • Janitorial services including, sweeping and mopping floors and cleaning restrooms.
  • Testing large and small electrical appliances.
  • Sorting and pricing hardware.
  • Cleaning and maintaining SVdP grounds.
  • Provide operational support to other departments as needed.

  • Excellent customer service skills.

  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, stressful environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to multi-task.
Physical Requirements
  • Must be able to stand for long periods of time (up to 8 hours) with reasonable breaks.
  • Must have the ability to kneel, bend, squat and carry a load and lift up to 50 pounds.
Probationary Period

New employees will be required to serve a 90-day probationary period, during this time employees are not eligible for holiday pay. At the end of the 90-day probationary period employees will receive holiday pay when their schedule work day falls on a paid holiday.

Schedule and Availability

This position requires shift work; mornings, afternoon, evenings and Saturdays.

Position Type and Pay

This is an hourly position at currently $17.13 per hour.

Leave and Benefits

Dental and vision insurance is offered to employees, at a cost, once they have been employed 90 days. Supplemental insurance (AFLAC and Colonial) is also offered at this 90-day point. Paid time off (PTO) will start to accrue after 90-days of continuous service and is earned at a rate based on length of service. Sick leave begins to accrue at time of hire.

The accrual rate is one (1) hour for every 40 hours worked and sick leave may not be used until the employee has 90 days of continuous service.
