Duties

• You will perform complex chemical and physical analysis on a diverse range of materials.
• You will perform calibration of complex analytical instruments following approved procedures using appropriate standards while ensuring calibration traceability.
• You will recommend and develop improved techniques and methods for sample preparation and analysis.
• You will determine appropriate established procedure to use for routine and non-routine samples by reviewing background information.
• You will plan, design, coordinate, and oversee execution of method validation studies to evaluate method suitability.
• You will prepare and revise procedures and implement modifications necessary to accommodate the specific types of test instrumentation and equipment available in the laboratory.

• You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• This position may require the ability to lift and/or carry loads up to 50 pounds in weight.
• This position may require the ability to climb ladders and scaffolding.
• This position may require the ability to work in confined spaces.

• This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.
• This position requires exposure to high noise levels.
• You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional Chemist, planning, coordinating, and conducting chemical and instrumental analysis of samples supporting Navy customer requirements.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.

• Degree: physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering that included 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics.
