Essential Functions and PurposeThe Rigger 1st Class is responsible for accomplishing work in accordance with work specifications safely, with the highest quality, in a professional manner. Assist other trades in removing equipment and/or structural components by the use of lifting equipment such as chain falls, cranes, shackles and slings.
Position Demands (Education/Training/Experience)- High School diploma or equivalent education.
- At least 4 years of directly related experience as a Rigger, preferably in the maritime industry.
- Advanced knowledge of crane signals and terminologies.
- Ability to communicate with crane operators via hand signals or voice radios.
- Ability to carry and use chain falls.
- Advanced knowledge of proper inspection, use, and storage of wire rope pennants and slings.
- Ability to determine load weight and center of gravity when rigging equipment.
- Ability to determine the correct rigging equipment for the current task.
- Knowledge of using complex multipoint suspension techniques to maneuver loads and move objects from heights of 50 ft to 70 ft.
- Knowledge of knot tying, including bowlines, square knots and hitches.
- Ability to estimate the weight needed to accomplish weight tests for different types of ships equipment.
- Ability to carry a full tool bag and assist outside machinist in removing, disassembling, repairing, reassembling and reinstalling ships equipment.
- Must be able to work at heights of 20 ft or higher.
- Must be able to stand, sit, walk, kneel and crawl for long periods of time.
- Must understand and adhere to company safety policies and industrial safety requirements.
- Basic tool sizes ranging from 1/4" to 1 ¼".

Working RelationshipsThis position reports to shop supervisor. It develops and maintains a positive working relationship with other trades and supports a team approach in the pursuit of common company goals.
Principal Responsibilities- Safely move heavy equipment/material throughout the ship.
- Ability to obtain a NASSCO Bremerton 20‑Ton forklift license.
- Rig to assemble/dismantle ships equipment.
- Hoist equipment using cranes, chain falls and pulleys according to NAVSEA standards.
- Inspect rigging equipment, including slings, shackles, synthetic slings, cables, and hooks, ensuring good, safe working condition.
- Calculate load weights and select appropriate rigging gear based on the weight, size and shape of the load to be lifted.
- Secure loads using rigging techniques such as ropes, chokers, slings, shackles, spreader bars and taglines to prevent shifting or damage during lifting operations.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area, including proper storage of rigging equipment and materials.
- Follow safety procedures and protocols to minimize risks related to rigging operations, including the use of personal protective equipment.
- Inspect, measure and record data of ships equipment for certification.
- Conduct weight tests of ships equipment.
- Willing to work at heights and/or over water.
- Assist with loading and unloading cargo, equipment and material from trucks.
- Work closely with other crew members, including rigging leaders, crane operators and dockworkers, to coordinate rigging activities.
- Adapt to changes in a fast‑paced environment.
- Navigate around and onboard naval vessels.
- Maintain accurate records of rigging operations, inspections and maintenance activities.
Works under the supervision of a Lead Rigger or Rigging Foreman.
