Maintenance Technician / Mechanic, Installation Technician
Duties
- Assist skilled and semi‑skilled trade workers by performing simpler trade duties such as obtaining tools, plans, and materials.
- Assist others with trade tasks including disassembly, repair, and assembly of components; preparation, coating or removal of materials from surfaces; and removal, fitting, and installation of piping.
- Assist with handling, storing, and disposing of materials.
- Must be a U.S. Citizen.
- Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
- Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.
- New employees to the Department of the Navy will be required to successfully pass the E‑Verify employment verification check.
- Within the DoD, the appointment of retired military members within 180 days after retirement is subject to U.S. Code 5 USC §3326.
- Male employees born after 12‑31‑59 must be registered for Selective Service.
- Required to successfully complete a pre‑appointment physical examination.
- Must obtain and maintain an interim, and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty; failure may result in offer withdrawal or removal.
- May be required to pass a pre‑employment drug test (including marijuana) and be subject to random testing.
- Must wear personal protective equipment (helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, safety shoes) continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work conducted in areas with potentially harmful physical and chemical agents; required participation in medical surveillance programs.
- Position may require travel to CONUS/OCONUS sites, including remote or isolated locations; must be able to travel on military/commercial aircraft for extended periods.
- This is a bargaining unit position.
- Must be able to lift items weighing up to 60 pounds and occasionally more.

Applicants must demonstrate the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position. Qualification requirements emphasize the quality of experience, not necessarily its length.
Qualifications will be evaluated based on knowledge, skills, abilities, and competencies relevant to the job elements. Applicants with a screen‑out element of RELIABILITY AND DEPENDABILITY will be disqualified. Examples include: received verbal or written praise for good work, left previous jobs under good circumstances within the last 5 years, consistent academic or performance grades.
Applicants must meet the requirements of the Office Of Personnel Management (OPM) Job Qualification Handbook for Trades and Labor Occupations. Volunteering and unpaid experience through National Service programs can count toward required competencies.
