General Function

Reporting to and under the general supervision of the Automotive Equipment Technician Supervisor, this position performs skilled maintenance, diagnostics, repair, and overhaul of the City's fleet vehicles and equipment within the Equipment Services Division of the Public Works & Utilities Department.

  • Perform routine and complex maintenance services, including inspections, adjustments, lubrication and component replacement to maximize equipment reliability, safety, and service life.
  • Perform preventive maintenance, inspections, diagnostics, repair, and overhaul of the City's fleet vehicles and equipment, including gasoline- and diesel-powered light-, medium-, and heavy-duty vehicles, police and fire apparatus, and other specialized equipment.
  • Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and test complex mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, steering, suspension, etc. and emission control systems using industry-standard diagnostic equipment, tools, and techniques.
  • Assist other Automotive Equipment Technicians with difficult tasks, complex repairs, diagnostics, or tasks and projects requiring specialized expertise or multiple technicians.
  • Fabricate, modify, install, and repair mechanical components, assemblies, and equipment using metal fabrication, welding, machining, and other shop techniques as required.
  • Inspect, maintain, repair, and test specialized fire apparatus and emergency response equipment, including pumps, valves, emergency lighting systems, and related components to ensure operational readiness and compliance with applicable standards.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment by properly operating, maintaining, and caring for shop equipment, tools, materials, and work areas in accordance with established safety procedures.
  • Maintain accurate maintenance records, inspection reports, work orders, and other documentation related to vehicle and equipment maintenance, repairs, and inspections.

    Knowledge of:

    • Maintenance, inspection, diagnosis, repair, and overhaul of gasoline- and diesel-powered vehicles and equipment, including light-, medium-, and heavy-duty fleet vehicles.
    • Mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, brake, steering, suspension, and drivetrain systems used in automotive and heavy equipment applications.
    • Preventive maintenance principles, diagnostic methods, testing equipment, and industry-standard repair procedures.
    • Metal fabrication, welding, machining, and the safe operation of shop tools, equipment, and lifting devices.
    • Occupational safety practices, hazardous materials handling, and applicable environmental and shop safety regulations.
    • Inspection, diagnosis, operation and repair of construction, utility, public works, emergency response, and specialty fleet vehicles and equipment.

    Skill in:

    • Diagnosing mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic equipment failures using diagnostic tools and testing equipment.
    • Performing preventive maintenance, repairs, fabrication, and equipment testing with accuracy and efficiency.
    • Operating and maintaining shop equipment, power tools, welding equipment, and specialized diagnostic instruments.
    • Organizing work, managing multiple repair priorities, and maintaining accurate maintenance records.

    Ability to:

    • Diagnose, repair, and maintain a wide variety of fleet vehicles and equipment while ensuring safe and reliable operation.
    • Read, interpret, and apply technical manuals, wiring diagrams, service bulletins, schematics, and equipment specifications.
    • Learn and apply new (and old) vehicle technologies, diagnostic methods, and repair techniques.
