Responsibilities

Under general supervision, responsible for coordinating and overseeing the routed dispatch office and its functions to ensure safe and reliable service throughout the service area. Responsible and accountable for the efficient and cost‑effective performance of activities related to dispatching transit operators, including driver and vehicle assignments, troubleshooting questions about vehicle performance, accidents, vehicle breakdowns and emergencies. Maintains radio contact with transit fleet and provides information to drivers regarding transit routes and schedules;

monitors on‑time performance of coaches; monitors daily operations and related activities as assigned. Uses specialized scheduling and vehicle monitoring software to ensure necessary data is collected and transmitted to customers and other internal departments. Assigns scheduled operators to vehicles and routes; makes last‑minute/emergent schedule changes as necessary and in accordance with the contract; ensures assigned vehicles meet the needs of the assigned route;

makes adjustments to operator work schedules, vehicles and routes as customer needs change. Notifies operators of scheduled report times; assesses operator fitness for duty; records late reports, attendance or appearance infractions and forwards to appropriate supervisor; arranges for replacement operators as required. Monitors vehicle readiness for service; performs pre‑trip readiness evaluations; maintains service records; receives defect reports and arranges for maintenance/service;

inspects for and reports vehicle damage; arranges for repairs. Requires orderly and efficient handling of simultaneous activities; receives and responds to operator and customer concerns related to service, routes and vehicles; answers telephone, radio communications and counter activities. May perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

High school graduation/GED and one year of experience in a transit or transportation operations function including public contact. Must be capable of operating any Kitsap Transit vehicle. One year of experience in a dispatch environment and/or experience in assigning different types of vehicles as day‑to‑day operational needs vary is preferred.

  • Working in a fast‑paced environment, independently responding to problems and tasks that arise simultaneously and/or unexpectedly
  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with other Kitsap Transit employees and the public
Licenses/Certifications

A valid Washington driver’s license and the ability to obtain a Class B CDL, airbrake restriction removed and passenger endorsement, within 3 months of hire. Must be able to obtain a Bangor Base security clearance.

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require dexterity of hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard and other equipment, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Sedentary work:
Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met. Some travel required.
