Job Overview
The Shipping Supervisor is a first‑line supervisor responsible for managing the shipping schedule and all associated functions for Brenham Operations. The role ensures efficient and timely transportation services, oversees shipping and material handling operations, and uses cost‑efficient methods of product receipt and delivery to internal and external customers/suppliers while meeting deadlines.
Responsibilities- Report to the Shipping Manager and oversee 80+ direct reports.
- Maintain authorized staffing levels and handle staffing vacancies, hiring, and onboarding.
- Interview candidates and recommend candidates for positions within prescribed guidelines.
- Develop and maintain relationships with transportation providers and carriers.
- Ensure quality inspections of products and services.
- Provide operational leadership for site distribution operations to meet or exceed customer fulfillment and cost objectives.
- Assist with investigations to verify and resolve customer or shipper complaints.
- Train, cross‑train, and develop employees in new operations and methods.
- Manage overall employee performance, ensure a safe work area, appropriate staffing, and document corrective actions.
- Set goals and objectives for employees and assist staff with work progress.
- Monitor and complete staff performance reviews.
- Implement procedures to maximize operating efficiency and reduce potential injuries.
- Lead, facilitate, and promote continuous improvement initiatives.
- Attend professional development courses.
- Identify employee training needs and support training programs.
- Recommend changes in layout, processes, or methods to improve operations and reduce costs.
- Ensure accurate and timely reporting of personnel time and production counts.
- Report discrepancies in specifications, methods, or engineering data to the appropriate authority.
- Maintain safety practices and foster a participative productivity climate.
- Work with HR to keep job descriptions up-to-date and accurate.
- Ensure monthly safety and department meetings are held and participate in Lean activities.
- Promote cell and team development.
- Track and chart productivity goals and guide productivity improvement.
- Ensure compliance with environmental regulations and maintain continuous awareness.
- Maintain records of first aid, OSHA recordable incidents, lost‑time injuries, and property damage.
- Control orders, preventative maintenance, housekeeping, and administrative functions.
- Associate’s degree with at least 7 years of relevant experience, or 9 years of relevant experience.
- At least 2 years of supervisory experience.
- Strong leadership, problem‑solving, planning, communication, and motivational skills.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in a fast‑paced environment with multiple deadlines.
- Forklift operation experience and ability to obtain Valmont standards certification.
- Knowledge of environmental safety and requirements.
- Ability to motivate, develop, and direct people and identify the best person for each task.
- Passion and integrity with the drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
- Five years of related work experience and a Bachelor’s degree (for highly qualified candidates).
- Professional experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
- Knowledge of Lean manufacturing methodology and tools.
- Knowledge of management principles for strategic planning and resource allocation.
Work is performed in both an office setting and production/shipping area. The position requires on‑site presence, standing, bending, reaching, lifting, and pivoting throughout the shift. The environment can vary from >100°F in summer to freezing temperatures in winter. Employees may experience wind, cold, heat, dust, fumes, noise, vibration, water, or oil. Safety glasses, steel‑toed shoes, ear protection, and safety hats may be required depending on the area.
Travel to other sites within the U.S. is infrequent. The role requires both physical and mental stamina, especially during busy periods, and may require intense mental and visual concentration. Adequate vision and hearing are required for machine diagnosis and reading small printed materials.
