Summary
The Production Supervisor is a first-line supervisor who is responsible for the safety of all employees being supervised, fosters a first-time product quality culture, exercises sound financial decision‑making and cost control, processes manufacturing steel poles, and follows the planned schedule. The role supervises hourly production employees and interacts with administration as needed.
Core Responsibilities- As a supervisor, demonstrate active employee engagement by:
- Conduct daily stand‑up/start‑up meetings to ensure all employees are “fit for duty” and perform warm‑up exercise identification.
- Enforce the work hardening policy: any new hires (direct or temp) are scheduled for 40 hours/week for the first 30 days without exceptions.
- Ensure that Valmont safety absolutes are never compromised. In case of a safety infraction (near miss, first aid, recordable, LTI, property damage) the supervisor:
- Leads the investigation and implements containment actions to allow safe return to work.
- Presents root‑cause findings and countermeasures (short‑ and long‑term) to employees and management.
- Act as a leader over production personnel and the work area, ensuring “first‑time quality” by:
- Immediately reporting any equipment issues.
- Owning root‑cause analysis of any rejected pole and performing time‑sensitive fact‑finding to prevent repeat rejects.
- Partnering with the Quality Supervisor to implement solutions, and documenting performance issues with HR when necessary.
- Effectively plan work, including:
- Daily task assignments with work plans pre‑arranged.
- Planning the daily schedule and reporting any schedule concerns.
- Monitor employee performance to ensure adherence to all safety policies and procedures.
- Implement and assign work schedules to maximize utilization of manpower, machines, and equipment.
- Define expected production standards and monitor performance of direct reports.
- Observe personnel to ensure proper operation of assigned work and equipment.
- Ensure inspection checks and quality assurance occur to produce high‑quality products.
- Promote a continuous productivity‑improvement climate that encourages suggestions for operational improvement.
- Administer and support company policies and procedures fairly and consistently.
- Train new employees on divisional and organizational activities and safety policies.
- Prepare daily timesheets for hourly employees, production summaries, and overtime and downtime reports.
The Role
- Reports to the Sr. Operations Manager.
- Has thorough knowledge of equipment and processes in the areas.
- Possesses knowledge of planning, organizing, controlling, coordinating, and directing manufacturing personnel.
- Has a high level of supervisory capability, ensuring leadership, motivation, and high standards of quality and productivity.
- React to change in a timely and organized manner.
- Evaluates alternatives, establishes appropriate priorities, and formulates sound decisions affecting all phases of operation.
- Fosters harmonious relations within and between shifts.
- Accountable for safety, product quality, cost control, meeting production schedules, accurate record‑keeping, minimizing scrap and rework, training, and communication with supervisory and management personnel.
- Frequent use of computer terminals and PCs to perform duties.
- Maintains thorough knowledge and awareness of safety issues and ensures adherence to safe practices.
- Understands the Valmont Way theory of Lean Manufacturing principles.
- Bachelor’s degree with 5+ years relevant experience or Associate’s degree with 7+ years relevant experience or 9+ years of relevant experience.
- Five (5) years of experience in manufacturing or logistics/distribution environment.
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Outlook.
- Strong leadership skills and ability to support divisional business objectives.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to read and interpret safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
