This position works under the direction of the Production Supervisor or Lead Person and is responsible for the set‑up and operation of one‑to‑two of several activities pertaining to the shearing, forming, burnishing, buffing, straightening, and cut‑off (saw) of tubes produced for and by the Big Wheel line at Valmont Industries, TX. The employee will also assist with the set‑up of other areas to gain knowledge of the entire process.
Shiftand Compensation
Standard shift: 3rd shift (Nights) Monday – Friday 11 PM – 7 AM
Starting hourly pay rate (LG5): $21.92 + $1.00 per hour shift differential
Eligible for annual discretionary bonus
Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year & 2 years
- Perform shearing, forming, burnishing, straightening, and cut‑off set‑ups to assure optimal performance
- Adjust hydraulic, pneumatic, mechanical, and electrical devices
- Initiate manual and auto cycles from manual controls or PLC touch panel
- Use pneumatic powered tools to buff/grind product to specification
- Use SMAW/Stick and GMAW/Gas Metal Arc welder to repair split seams that may occur during production
- Set up straightener to ensure hold‑down cables and roller supports are correctly located for varying tube sizes
- Inspect product according to Valmont and industry standards
- Maintain all equipment at all times in proper working condition
- Perform regular preventative maintenance on all equipment in assigned areas
- Notify supervisor and/or lead person when assistance is required for maintenance or repairs beyond capability
- Assist maintenance personnel as needed
- Assist and/or perform set‑up of other production equipment as directed
- Keep assigned area clean and maintain housekeeping program
- Maintain safety awareness and address unsafe conditions
- Record and maintain data, setups, inspections, and product documentation
- Operate forklift to move materials in the shop areas
- Other duties as assigned or directed
- Minimum of 6 months of machine operation experience
- Basic math skills (adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing)
- Pass forklift test from Valmont’s safety department
- Read a tape measure
- Prioritize work and meet deadlines
- Follow written and verbal instructions
- Solve practical problems in a timely manner
- Deliver on‑time, high‑quality results
- Read/write clearly; basic math; read O.D. tape and tape measure; use Microsoft Excel
- Burnisher/Buffer/Straightener/Cut Off (Saw): certified to GMAW
- Tube Line Former Operator: same core skills
- Tube Line Shear Line Operator: must use micrometer
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- One year of previous experience operating manufacturing machinery (preferred)
- Previous welding experience in a professional environment
- Experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment
- Experience operating overhead crane
- Experience working with Lean manufacturing methodology
This job is typically performed in an indoor shop environment with temperatures ranging from about 40 °F in winter to 105 °F in summer. Exposures may include mill scale, lubricating fluids, smoke from cutting/welding operations, dust, fumes, noise, vibration, water, and oil. The ambient noise level is around 80 decibels. Employees may be required to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally, with most lifts around 10 pounds.
Safety glasses, earplugs, and metatarsal safety shoes are required at all times. Operators may be required to use forklifts, straddle trucks, and rag trucks.
