A Brief Summary of This PositionUnder the direction of the Production Supervisor, the CNC Shape Cutter Operator operates the CNC shape cutter machine with oxy‑fuel and plasma torches to produce metal components.
Shift3rd shift (Nights) Monday - Thursday 9PM - 7AM
CompensationStarting Hourly Pay Rate (LG6): $24.47 + $1.00 per hour shift differential. Eligible for annual discretionary bonus. Opportunity for step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year & 2 years.
Responsibilities- Read daily workloads to determine what parts are required and prioritize according to constraints and shipping buffers.
- Determine what material is needed, check material on hand, and order any other materials needed from Stores.
- Instruct material handler on what material to load and/or unload, which material to return to Stores, how to load table to maximize productivity.
- Check material for grade, thickness, and size. Color‑code parts as required per routing.
- Read prints, determine tolerances, and check parts against prints to ensure quality of parts being cut.
- Based on the appearance and quality of parts being produced, make appropriate adjustments to the processes, such as travel speed, tip size, tip replacement, gas pressures, kerf compensation, torch height, and other factors as needed to produce the desired quality.
- Perform all functions associated with operation of the CNC/DNC shape cutting machine; start‑up and shutdown procedures; transfer of programs to and from the host computer; set up the programs to produce required parts; originate programs from standard shapes; modify programs from oxy‑fuel to plasma and from plasma to oxy‑fuel; adjust kerf settings.
- Understand all functions on CNC: plasma cutting tips/nozzle size and speed charts, oxy‑fuel cutting tips and gas pressures, kerf settings, amperage settings, standard shapes, keyboard to computer, and appropriate instruction manuals.
- Perform daily, weekly, and monthly operator preventive maintenance.
- Communicate problems with CNC shape cutter or any other equipment to lead person, supervisor, or maintenance to ensure problem resolution.
- Use knowledge of the machine and its characteristics to assist maintenance personnel in maintaining and troubleshooting its system.
- Use and understand measuring instruments: tape measure, level, protractor, and micrometer.
- Determine optimum plate utilization to minimize scrap.
- Maintain housekeeping in assigned areas.
- Be responsible for safety and environmental issues regarding assigned area: material handling, crane use, vacuum lift use, cutting torch, hot parts, lifting weight limits, proper eye protection, proper level in water table to minimize smoke generated during cutting process.
- Other duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications:
- 6 months previous experience reading and utilizing blueprints.
- Must be able to read and write English.
- Proficient at math including adding, subtracting, multiplying, dividing fractions, and conversion of decimals.
- Accurate reading of a tape measure and micrometer.
Highly Qualified Candidates:
- One year of previous experience working in a Manufacturing environment.
- One year of previous experience operating a forklift.
- One year of previous experience operating a CNC machine with G‑code programming.
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
- Able to communicate and interact with coworkers in a positive manner.
- Attention to detail and ability to follow work instructions.
- High awareness for safety at all times.

Ambient temperatures vary with seasonal weather. Exposure to metal and smoke fumes, abnormal noise level requiring hearing protection, exposure to dirt, grease, mill scale, cutting fluid, rust inhibitors, and metal particles. PPE required: hand, hearing, foot, eye, and head protection. Frequent outside exposure to material handling equipment such as forklifts, straddle trucks, and shag trucks.
