Seamer Operator – Individual ContributorThe Seamer Operator is responsible for the set‑up and operation of the flux core sub‑arc seam welding machine to place a continuous seamed weld on one or two sides of the pole shafts.
Standard Shift: 1st shift (Mon‑Fri 7AM – 3PM). Starting hourly pay rate (LG9): $26.86. Eligible for annual discretionary bonus. Step pay increases at 90 days, 1 year & 2 years.
Essential Functions- Fuse metal structural components together by multiple submerged‑arc welding processes in the fabrication of steel electrical poles and other structures.
- Plan and layout, work from blueprints and drawings, set up work, determine operation sequences, and weld objects involving critical safety and load requirements in various positions.
- Perform repetitive assembling operations according to established procedures, using hand tools and measuring devices.
- Move pole shafts using an overhead crane and gather parts and materials to complete the project.
- Setup, operate, and perform general maintenance of equipment without difficulty.
- Make mathematical calculations when preparing products or setting up machinery.
- Read and decipher blueprint and flat sheet drawings correctly and without assistance.
- Work under conditions with accurate performance and meet time limits.
- Accountable for essential tools and equipment and their maintenance.
- Actively participate in department safety and demonstrate excellent safety practices in compliance with Valmont safety policies.
- Reports to the Production Supervisor.
- Successful completion of an internal welding test.
- Working knowledge of fixturing and welding set‑up parameters (amps, volts, etc.).
- Knowledge of welding properties of a variety of metals.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and/or shop drawings.
- Ability to set up work and determine operation sequence.
- Ability to calculate formulas using basic mathematics and standard U.S. and metric measurements.
- Problem‑solving skills to recognize and resolve practical issues.
- Ability to work in a team environment with a diverse group.
- Attention to detail and adherence to work instructions.
- Ability to meet production, safety, and quality standards in a high‑paced environment.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs (frequently up to 20 lbs).
- Wear required personal protective equipment and follow facility safety regulations.
- Maintain a safe and productive working environment.
- High school diploma or GED equivalent.
- Graduation from an accredited trade school for welding.
- One year previous experience in a manufacturing or fabrication environment.
- One year previous experience welding in a professional environment.
- Demonstrate a commitment to safety by conforming to all Valmont safety policies.
- Possess passion and integrity with a drive to excel and deliver exceptional results.
Work is primarily performed in an indoor shop environment with exposure to noise, fumes, excessive heat/cold, dust, welding arc, chemicals, smoke, and confined spaces. The environment is fast‑paced and demanding. Safety glasses, hearing protection, and metatarsal safety shoes must be worn at all times. The employee must remain standing for the entire shift. PPE must be worn for production work.
