Brief

Job Description

This position provides advanced vocational nursing care for individuals with complex medical, mental health, and behavioral health needs at State Supported Living Centers. The role includes administering treatment, collecting specimens, and instructing staff while working morning, evening, or night shifts across multiple homes.

Responsibilities
  • Provide advanced and basic nursing tasks to promote health and safety of residents.
  • Administer medications and treatments via oral, rectal, internal, or injection routes.
  • Conduct complex procedures such as tracheostomy care, gastrostomy/jejunostomy care, wound care, and breathing treatments.
  • Collect specimens for laboratory work and perform health screenings as requested.
  • Monitor residents’ weight, diet, feeding, vital signs, and overall health status.
  • Document treatments and observations accurately in electronic health records or paper charts.
  • Provide on‑job training and instruction to LVNs and direct support professionals.
  • Assist RNs with protocol implementation, quality assurance, and infection control initiatives.
  • Respond to emergency situations and implement safety procedures.
  • Participate in facility committees and community outreach as needed.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In-depth knowledge of nursing standards, procedures, and emergency care.
  • Understanding of state/federal regulations related to Intermediate Care Facilities for individuals with intellectual disabilities.
  • Strong reasoning and problem‑solving skills to manage complex clinical situations.
  • Proficiency with medical and electronic health record software.
  • Effective communication and teaching skills for staff and residents.
  • Current CPR certification and physical ability to perform CPR.
Licensure and Certification

Licensed as a Vocational Nurse (LVN) in Texas or a state that recognizes reciprocity through the Nurse Licensure Compact.

Initial Screening Criteria
  • Graduation from an accredited LVN program.
  • Minimum 6 months of prior LVN employment; 12 months preferred.
  • Experience working with individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities is preferred.
  • Experience in training or leading staff is preferred.
  • Experience with electronic health record systems is preferred.
Additional Information

Applicants must pass criminal background checks, drug screening, and registry checks, and register with Selective Service if required. The position may require overtime, extended hours, weekend, and holiday work. All applicants must be at least 18 years old.
