TxDOT's Bryan District is looking for a Transportation Maintenance Tech I or II based in Washington County. This position performs routine transportation maintenance and repair work, operates light and heavy equipment, manages preventive and minor equipment maintenance, controls traffic, and assists the public during emergency situations.

General Transportation Tech I: $40,918 – $61,130 per year
General Transportation Tech II: $42,976 – $64,469 per year

• Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts; perform basic welding as needed.
• Provide support to local law enforcement at accident sites and assist stranded motorists.
• Set up, operate, and adjust traffic control devices; install and move cones, warning signs, barricades, and flags.
• Inspect barricades for compliance with standards.
• Maintain highways and rights‑of‑way; perform roadway repairs; erect and repair guard rails, highway markers, and signs.
• Maintain picnic and rest areas; move litter and roadway debris; mow and perform landscaping tasks.
• Operate light equipment such as a front‑end loader (≤ 1 cu yd), pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower.
• Conduct preventive maintenance inspections and minor repairs on equipment; complete required reports (timekeeping, inventory, accident forms, PMI).
• Sand or clean bridges and roads; post warning signs; assist during emergencies (floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, hazardous material spills).
• Inspect maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure compliance with plans and specifications.
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

• Serve as the sole maintenance contract inspector on small projects.
• Inspect traffic control devices and their placement at construction sites for compliance.
• Maintain construction project and bridge inspection records; process related paperwork.
• Perform skilled roadway repairs; operate heavy equipment (front‑end loader ≥ 1 ½ cu yd, tractor‑trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint stripper, dump truck).
• Identify, repair, and install signs; perform welding; operate equipment.
• Inspect maintenance contract construction for compliance.
• Identify, analyze, and implement solutions for complex maintenance problems.
• Inspect materials and equipment in manufacturing or supply facilities for compliance with specifications.
• Operate survey instruments (theodolite, transit level, electronic distance meter, total survey station).
• Perform other job responsibilities as assigned.

• TMT I – No experience required.
• TMT II – 1 year experience in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work.
• Experience may be satisfied by part‑time full‐time, or summarized as one year of experience per year of education.
• Valid driver’s license. Must drive a state vehicle. Commercial Class "A" CDL with "N" endorsement required within specified days of employment.
• Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) required for both levels.

• Knowledge of intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work.
• Familiarity with applicable inspection methods, procedures, and techniques.
• Understanding of materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance.
• Proficiency with the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
• Awareness of maintenance concepts, policies, and industry safety standards.
