As we launch our new payroll services division, we are seeking an experienced payroll professional to build, lead, and grow this important part of our organization.
Position OverviewThe Director of Payroll Services will be responsible for establishing and leading Principle HR Solutions’ payroll division. This is both a strategic leadership position and a hands‑on payroll role. The successful candidate must be able to personally process payroll, oversee multiple client payrolls, manage complex payroll situations, and create the systems and processes necessary to support future growth.
This individual will work with clients using a variety of payroll platforms. The ability to quickly learn unfamiliar systems, transition between platforms, and accurately process payroll in different software environments is essential.
The ideal candidate is an experienced payroll leader who combines strong technical knowledge with exceptional client service, sound judgment, attention to detail, and a genuine desire to serve others.
Primary Responsibilities- Build and lead the day-to-day operations of the new payroll services division.
- Personally process payroll while providing oversight and quality control for all client payrolls.
- Manage multiple client payrolls with different pay frequencies, policies, deadlines, and reporting requirements.
- Process and oversee payroll for employers operating in multiple states and local tax jurisdictions.
- Work proficiently across multiple payroll platforms, including both company-selected software and clients’ existing payroll systems.
- Lead the implementation and onboarding of new payroll clients.
- Review client payroll data, earnings, deductions, taxes, benefits, garnishments, and employer contributions for accuracy.
- Ensure accurate and timely payroll tax deposits, filings, reconciliations, and year-end reporting.
- Oversee quarterly and annual payroll reporting, including Forms 941, W-2, W-3, and applicable state and local filings.
- Handle complex payroll matters, including multistate taxation, wage garnishments, benefit deductions, bonuses, commissions, retroactive pay, and payroll corrections.
- Research and resolve payroll discrepancies, tax notices, client questions, and employee payment issues.
- Establish documented payroll procedures, internal controls, approval processes, and quality‑assurance standards.
- Maintain the confidentiality and security of payroll, banking, tax, and employee information.
- Monitor changes in federal, state, and local payroll laws and tax requirements.
- Train, supervise, and develop additional payroll team members as the division grows.
- Ensure adequate backup coverage and business continuity for all client payrolls.
- Collaborate with the HR consulting team to provide clients with coordinated payroll and human resources support.
- Build strong, trusted client relationships through responsive communication and dependable service.
- Help develop service offerings, operational goals, performance measures, and growth strategies for the payroll division.
- Significant hands‑on experience processing and managing payroll.
- Demonstrated experience with multistate payroll and the related state and local tax requirements.
- Experience processing payroll for multiple clients, business units, or legal entities.
- Demonstrated ability to work in multiple payroll software platforms.
- Strong knowledge of federal, state, and local wage‑and‑hour and payroll tax requirements.
- Experience with payroll tax filings, reconciliations, quarterly reporting, and year‑end processing.
- Ability to manage competing deadlines and process multiple payrolls accurately and on time.
- Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and reconciliation skills.
