POSITION SUMMARY:

In the absence of the school nurse, the substitute nurse oversees the emotional, mental, physical and social health of students in our schools by providing basic health services and preventative education throughout the school days, managing students who have chronic health conditions and students with disabilities, and working with parents and teachers to create and enforce health care plans/504s.

REPORTS TO:

School Principal or ECC Director/Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum, Instruction & Student Services

Qualifications

Education and/or

Experience:

  • Degree in Nursing
  • Previous school nursing experience preferred
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • Current RN license in the State of Missouri
  • Must maintain updated CPR/AED certification and training in the areas of communicable diseases

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Provide school health service according to state laws, administrative regulations and school board policies regulating the provision of such services.
  • Assess students on a regular basis to detect health needs.
  • Assume responsibility for the identification and referral of students in need of medical and dental care.
  • Contact parents/guardians of students regarding health concerns.
  • Assume authority, in the absence of a physician, for the care of a student or staff member who has suffered an injury or emergency illness.
    • Communicate with parents/guardians regarding any accidents and/or injuries that occurred to their child while at school.
    • Inform emergency contact of emergency care given to a student or staff member.
  • Administer first aid in accordance with established first aid procedures.
  • Manage a safe medication administration program.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Provides an environment compatible with the educational needs of the students.
  • Produces a daily summary for the effective communication of daily treatments/events for the school nurse
  • Completes other duties as assigned.
