Staff Engineer – Traffic and Development
The City of Brentwood, TN seeks a self-motivated, goal-driven, and collaborative colleague to join its team as the Staff Engineer of Traffic and Development. Starting salary (pending June 22 Commission approval) is $88,769 - $97,656 depending on qualifications and experience. Up to 5% salary increase after successful completion of six-month probationary period. Plus:
Transportation Allowance up to $2,000/year to be distributed equally over 26 pay periods annually.
As the Staff Engineer of Traffic and Development, you'll provide technical support for development review and traffic engineering activities within the Engineering Department. The City of Brentwood, located in scenic Williamson County, is considered one of the most desirable suburban locations in Tennessee with a population of approximately 46,000 residents and a strong reputation for thoughtful growth, high-quality infrastructure, and excellent public services.
Duties and Responsibilities- Coordinates neighborhood traffic calming requests, including petition review, public meeting coordination, speed and volume data evaluation, documentation, and recommendations consistent with adopted City policy.
- Reviews development plans and related engineering documents, including site plans, subdivision plats, roadway plans, grading plans, drainage studies, permits, and development proposals, for compliance with City code and engineering standards.
- Performs limited review of stormwater and utility components of private development plans, including water and sewer plans, in coordination with Engineering and Water Services staff.
- Tracks development submittals, permit submissions, plan review comments, public petitions, and related review status information.
- Assists in calculation construction cost estimates for bonding purposes.
- Provides technical expertise in construction resolution and performs site inspections to coordinate effectively with designers and contractors.
- Coordinates with third-party traffic consultants when outside expertise is required, assisting with contracts, review of deliverables, and stakeholder communication.
- Supports Planning Commission and Board of Commissioners agenda items related to development, traffic calming, and transportation safety matters.
- Assists with traffic safety evaluations, including stop sign requests, speed limit modifications, school zone concerns, and pedestrian and bicycle infrastructure improvements.
- Reviews traffic impact studies and assists with signal warrant reviews, multi-way stop analyses, and other transportation safety evaluations.
- Coordinates with internal staff, external consultants, and Public Works on traffic operations, signage, pavement markings, signal timing, intersection safety improvements, and MUTCD compliance.
- Responds to developers, consultants, HOA/POA representatives, and members of the public regarding traffic operations, permitting, and development review matters.
- Supports updates to design standards, subdivision regulations, and transportation-related policies as directed.
