Overview
Under general supervision and according to established procedures specific to age and on order of a physician, provides respiratory care designed to stabilize, prevent or remedy patient respiratory problems. Arranges and operates oxygen and other therapeutic gas equipment to safely administer prescribed doses of medical gases and aerosolized drugs. Checks equipment regularly for proper functioning and records data obtained during therapy and diagnostic testing in patient charts.
Draws, analyzes, and reports ABGs (arterial blood gases) to physicians and nurses. Performs EKGs. Involved with adult ventilator weaning protocol and MDI (Metered Dose Inhaler) protocol. Participates in embracing excellence and relationship-based care.
- Provide respiratory care according to age-specific procedures and physician orders.
- Operate oxygen and other therapeutic gas equipment to administer prescribed medications and gases.
- Check equipment regularly for proper function and document therapy and diagnostic data in patient charts.
- Draw, analyze, and report arterial blood gases to physicians and nurses; perform EKGs.
- Participate in adult ventilator weaning protocol and MDI protocol as part of care plan.
- Contribute to delivering excellence and relationship-based care.
- Graduate of an approved AMA school for Respiratory Therapy.
- Current NBRC credential (Certified or Registered) and current license issued by the New Jersey State Board of Respiratory Care.
- Analytical ability to resolve problems requiring basic scientific, mathematical, or technical principles.
- Ability to explain clinical, technical and diagnostic procedures to patients and families; provide comfort and enforce policies and regulations in difficult situations; communicate effectively.
- Experience providing direct patient care to neonate, pediatric, adolescent, young adult, adult and geriatric patients.
- Current BLS certification.
- Certifications for BLS, ACLS, and PALS to be granted through the American Heart Association (effective January 2019).
