POSITION SUMMARY

Seeking a senior-level CNC lathe setup and engineering technician who can independently support complex precision turning work from drawing and CAD review through machine setup, program refinement, first-piece verification and production support. The ideal candidate is a hands-on machinist/technician who can solve setup and process problems on the floor, work closely with engineering and quality, and consistently produce high-quality aerospace components.

REQUIRED

CANDIDATE BACKGROUND
  • Minimum of 5 years of CNC turning, CNC lathe setup, tooling production or closely related precision machining experience.
  • Aerospace manufacturing experience, including work in a controlled quality environment where customer drawings, specifications, traceability and process discipline are critical.
  • High school diploma or GED required; vocational or technical school training in machining, manufacturing or a related discipline preferred.
  • Strong shop mathematics and the ability to read and understand engineering drawings and technical documentation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with machinists, engineers, quality personnel and production leadership.
CORE TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES
  • Advanced setup and operation of CNC lathes, including 2-axis turning and Y-axis/live-tooling or mill-turn equipment.
  • CNC programming and program editing, including G-codes, M-codes, MDI programming, speeds, feeds, tool changes, geometry/wear offsets and radius compensation.
  • Mastercam programming and program modification for 2-axis lathe and Y-axis/live-tooling mill-turn applications.
  • CAD model interrogation using Solid Works or comparable CAD software to obtain dimensions and manufacturing data for programming and setup.
  • Workholding setup using 3-jaw chucks, collets and custom soft jaws, including mounting, indicating and boring soft jaws for part holding.
  • Tool selection and process optimization, including selection/calculation of appropriate speeds, feeds and chip load for a range of materials.
  • Precision inspection using calipers, outside/depth micrometers, height gages, indicators and related measuring equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose machining, setup, tooling and process issues and make practical corrections with minimal supervision.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Provide high-level CNC lathe setup, programming, program editing and technical support for production jobs.
  • Review drawings, CAD data and job requirements; establish an efficient machining approach, tooling plan, work holding method and setup sequence.
  • Set up machines accurately and efficiently and support production to required specifications, quality expectations and scheduled hours.
  • Support development and improvement of CNC lathe manufacturing processes to reduce setup time, cycle time, scrap and rework.
  • Work closely with Engineering and Quality to resolve manufacturability, inspection and process issues.
  • Perform in-process and first-piece dimensional verification and maintain a strong focus on quality at the machine.
  • Support production output and on-time completion by identifying constraints and resolving technical problems that interfere with machining performance.
  • Help maintain CNC equipment, tooling and work areas in an organized condition and support preventive maintenance and 5S practices.
  • Provide technical guidance and practical training to less-experienced CNC lathe personnel as needed.
AEROSPACE / QUALITY ENVIRONMENT
  • Experience working within an AS9100 or comparable aerospace quality system is strongly preferred.
  • Must be comfortable following documented procedures, customer requirements, inspection requirements and controlled manufacturing processes.
  • Candidate should demonstrate a quality-first mindset and experience working with tight-tolerance precision components where rework and nonconformance reduction are important.
