Our TeamThe Special Work Assignment Travel Team (SWATT) is a DMV initiative to support our agency workforce across the State of Connecticut. SWATT was created in 2019 to help keep staffing levels appropriate on a temporary and as-needed basis when employees are on vacation or out sick. Branch locations include Bridgeport, Hamden, New Britain, Norwich and Wethersfield, CT. These permanent part‑time positions (34 hours per week, up to 39 hours) assist with the initial intake of customers and perform motor vehicle transactions.
Incumbents may be required to work in other branch locations, travel up to 45 miles from their home location, and work overtime if needed.
- Part‑time (34 hours per week; up to 39 hours)
- Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 9:00 am – 4:45 pm
- Thursday: 10:30 am – 6:15 pm
- Saturday: 7:45 am – 12:45 pm
- First shift, Office/On‑Site (no telework)
- Must be willing to travel to branch locations as needed
- Mileage reimbursement for travel
The Motor Vehicle Examiner positions are fast‑paced, customer‑focused roles that involve handling money and a high volume of customer contact. Incumbents will be responsible for:
- Assisting with the initial intake of customers and performing a range of motor vehicle transactions
- Providing excellent customer service and handling money accurately
- Operating computer systems, office equipment, and the DMV’s cash register
- Traveling to other DMV locations based on agency needs
- Maintaining records, verifying documents, and ensuring compliance with policies and procedures
- Processing fees, issuing licenses, and managing paperwork for titles, registrations, and licenses
- Managing appointments, coordinating workflows, and performing routine equipment maintenance
- Responding to public inquiries and providing accurate information on DMV requirements and procedures
- Performing specific research assignments such as chain of ownership or lien information when required
The Connecticut DMV’s mission is to promote and advance public safety, security, and service through the regulation of drivers, their motor vehicles, and vehicle‑related businesses.
Purpose of Job Class (Nature of Work)In the DMV central and branch offices this class is accountable for examining forms, applications and supporting documentation before granting issuance of a title, operator’s license and/or registration.
Examples of Duties- Reviews and examines applications and supporting documents for operator licenses, vehicle registrations and certificates of title to ensure clear, complete and accurate information
- Performs limited restorations of driver licenses or motor vehicle registrations
- Verifies data such as insurance coverage, vehicle identification number, property tax liability and suspension records
- Determines proof of ownership and existence of encumbrances from submitted information
- Prepares and sends rejection letters or requests for additional information
- Responds to inquiries from the public and co‑workers and provides correct information on requirements and procedures
- Issues motor vehicle operator licenses containing applicant photographs
- Collects fees, operates cash registers, and balances cash and documents
- Processes registration renewals, title applications, and disposition requests
- Receives training to perform full‑scale registration activities on a limited basis
- Maintains records of approved and rejected applications, performs research assignments, and clears duplicate identification lists
- Operates photography equipment, performs equipment maintenance, and operates office software
- Knowledge of office systems and procedures
- Strong interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
- Ability to handle and count money accurately
- Understanding of laws, policies and procedures and ability to apply them
- Ability to maintain records, examine documents for completeness and accuracy
