Project Engineer - Heavy Civil Construction

Location:

Bridgeport, CT – Project Sites

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $70k+ (DOE) with excellent benefits and bonus program

Waters Construction is seeking a Project Engineer to join our Heavy Civil team. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to build a long‑term career in heavy highway, sitework, and civil construction while learning from experienced project managers, superintendents, estimators, and division leadership.

At Waters, the Project Engineer plays a critical role in keeping projects organized, supported, and moving forward. This position works closely with project managers and superintendents to help drive scheduling, purchasing, subcontractor coordination, documentation, submittals, cost tracking, and day‑to‑day communication between the field and office.

Why Waters?

A contractor with staying power and momentum:
Family‑owned, CT‑based, and delivering heavy civil infrastructure work across highways, bridges, transit, utilities, environmental remediation, and specialty paving; built on execution and long‑term customer trust.

A team you’ll actually like working with:
You’ll partner daily with a close, highly cooperative group of project managers and engineers; fast communication, strong follow‑through, and shared wins (the way job teams should run).

Our work makes a clear contribution to society and the infrastructure around us because we connect communities. Whether we are paving taxiways at the airport, rehabilitating bridges, or building at the train stations, these projects help bring people together.

What You Will Do
  • Support project managers and superintendents in the planning and execution of heavy civil construction projects.
  • Maintain accurate project files, documentation, and correspondence.
  • Manage the flow of purchase orders, subcontracts, submittals, shop drawings, and material certifications.
  • Coordinate timely ordering of materials and scheduling of subcontractors.
  • Update project schedules and help track progress against planned work.
  • Communicate daily with superintendents to support field operations and keep office and field aligned.
  • Assist with quantity takeoffs, cost tracking, requisitions, and payment documentation.
  • Review monthly requisitions with owner representatives and help ensure timely and accurate subcontractor payments.
  • Help organize subcontractor and vendor workflow and follow through on open items.
  • Support project reporting, project controls, and close coordination with the larger operations team.
Position Overview

We are seeking an individual with strong organizational skills and attentions to details. Experience in the Civil industry preferred, or willingness to learn quickly. Good written and verbal communication skills will make your daily job responsibilities easier to complete; knowledge of project operations, scheduling and field coordination is advised, but can be learned quickly.

The ideal candidate is self‑motivated, with a strong work ethic and desire to grow, while building a commanding knowledge of the contract documents, specifications and subcontractor/project controls.

Mission for the position

We are looking for project engineers that run the day‑to‑day field office operations of complex projects ranging from $5M to $100M supporting PMs and Superintendents. We expect this future leader to be capable of learning fast, while working cooperatively with foremen, subcontractors, and client’s representatives.

Compensation

Our investment is in you.

  • Salary Range:
Based on experience and skill level - $70,000 and above, based on experience and proficiency.
  • Insurance:
