Position Summary

Individual colleges within the Community College system provide child development centers, offering child care, child development, nutrition and related services for pre‑school children of students, staff and citizens of communities in their respective service areas. The colleges also offer academic programs in early childhood education. The child development centers provide the collateral function of serving as laboratories for practical experience by early childhood education students.

The Director of Child Development Center manages the operation of a pre‑school child development and care center as well as the academic practicum of early childhood education students at a Community College.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Under the direction of a Dean or other administrator, the Director of Child Development Center is accountable for the operation and administration of the College’s Child Development Center and for assisting the College’s Early Childhood Development students in carrying out their academic practica through effective performance in these essential functional areas:

Key responsibilities include:

  • Program planning and development
  • Center operation and administration
  • Student teacher instruction
  • Parent communications
  • Program quality assurance

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies
  • Service on assigned committees and task forces
  • Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational and professional meetings which may occur during evenings and weekends
Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in an appropriately related field together with two (2) or more years of experience in a related field; or a combination of education, training and experience which would lead to the competencies required for successful performance of the position’s essential duties.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Early childhood education, including classroom or laboratory instruction
  • Childcare administration or business management
  • Supervision of human resources
  • Developing and managing operating budgets and plans
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams)
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working with children ranging in age from 6 months to 5 years.
  • Experience working with Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards (ELDS), Connecticut Documentation and Observation for Teaching System (CT DOTS), and Project Approach.
  • Experience working in an AANEYC facility and completing accreditation reports as well as working in a School Readiness facility.
  • Experience teaching in an early childhood academic program at post‑secondary institutions
Special Requirements

Incumbents must be fingerprinted through the Office of Early Childhood (OEC) and approved to work in an early care and education setting and have the CT Director's Credential or at least the approved OEC 3 credit course in administration & supervision of ECE programs.
