Position

Summary

The Child Development Teacher plans and carries out learning activities for children in the college child development center and assists early childhood education students in gaining practical teaching experience as part of their curriculum.

Essential Duties And Responsibilities
  • Teaching the Laboratory School children
    • Provide age‑ and developmentally appropriate learning experiences for assigned children in the College’s Laboratory School.
  • Overseeing student teachers’ academic lab experience
    • Contribute to the practical experience of the College’s early childhood education students.
  • Parent communications
    • Communicate with parents about their children’s progress and the services of the Laboratory School.
  • Participating in Center administration
    • Contribute to the effective management of the Laboratory School by participating in its administration.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Attendance and participation at convocation and commencement ceremonies.
  • Service on assigned committees and task forces.
  • Attendance and participation at committee, staff, informational, and professional meetings that may occur during evenings and weekends.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood Education or an appropriately related field plus at least two (2) years of experience in a related field, or a combination of education, training, and experience that leads to the competencies required for successful performance.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Early childhood education.
  • Child development and learning principles and applications.
  • Childcare administration.
  • Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds, including individuals with disabilities.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
Special Requirements
  • Hold valid First Aid, CPR, and Medication Administration certificates approved by Connecticut Office of Early Childhood Division of Licensing;
    Connecticut Office of Early Childhood Health & Safety Training;
    Mandated Reporter Training.
  • Incumbent must be fingerprinted through the Connecticut Office of Early Childhood and approved to work in a childcare setting.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with the Connecticut Early Learning and Development Standards and the Connecticut Documentation and Observation for Teaching Systems.
  • Experience with NAEYC accreditation and State of CT early childhood education licensing.
  • Experience with in a laboratory school and/or with preservice teachers.
  • Knowledge of, or experience with, the Project Approach and/or the Developmental Interaction Approach.
  • Proven experience implementing and assessing effective classroom and behavior management strategies.
  • Experience supporting children with diverse abilities, learning styles, and developmental needs.
