PRIMARY FUNCTION

STEM Specialist leads the STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) programs at Wakeman Boys & Girls Club at Smilow-Burroughs Clubhouse through program activities designed for our youth. The Specialist will help plan and manage the on-site organization's STEM Programs. They will provide lesson plans and activities weekly for their designated location, while keeping WBGC standards. The STEM Specialist will lead and assist on programs daily for all grades K-12 for the Smilow-Burroughs after school program.

ESSENTIAL

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
  • Assist in creating and managing on site lesson plans in creating and developing hands on activities
  • Prepare equipment/supplies each day.
  • Work with staff in overseeing organized arrival and dismissal
  • Monitor STEM Programs
  • Communicate with Director regarding participant needs.
  • Assist staff/volunteers to appropriately identify and intervene with behavior/social challenges and goals of youth.
  • Place orders with Amazon through director on supplies needed
  • Effectively communicate with staff, youth, teens, and faculty in groups
  • Be available Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday from 3-6pm and occasional evenings.
SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED
  • Experience supervising youth in school, camp, sports or similar setting, ideally grades 3-8 and/or grades 9-12.
  • Ability to communicate with parents/children from diverse cultural/socioeconomic backgrounds.
  • Effectively collaborate with directors and staff daily, including teens and adults.
  • Basic knowledge of Life skills, science, education, art, Apple programming, Social Emotional Learning, games, crafts and similar activities for children grades 3-8.
  • Enthusiasm, creativity, ability to multi-task and make decisions under pressure.
  • Conflict mediation.
  • Understanding of youth and teen engagement.
  • Working with special needs populations.
  • First Aid/CPR/AED training, classes will be offered
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS /WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Ability to sit and/or stand for long periods of time.
  • Mobility to make facility inspections. Ability to reach and bend, and push/pull or lift objects less than thirty pounds.
  • Ability to perform manipulative skills such as writing, using a keyboard and/or calculator.
  • Ability to see and read objects closely as in reading narrative or financial reports.
  • Ability to read from a computer monitor. Ability to see objects far away as in driving.
  • Ability to hear normal sounds with background noise as in hearing using a telephone.
  • Ability to distinguish verbal communication and communicate through speech.
  • Ability to maintain files, records, spread sheets and data base and to make mathematical calculations using a calculator.
  • Ability to concentrate on detail and issues with some interruption, pressure and changing priorities.
  • Memory to perform multiple and diverse tasks over long periods of time and the ability to remember information that has been read, studied or previously learned
