This is a hybrid position requiring in‑office work three days per week. The role is ideally based in Buffalo, NY but may also be located in an M&T office in Baltimore, MD;

Washington, DC; or another M&T Bank corporate office.
Independently develops, implements, maintains, analyzes and manages quantitative/econometric behavioral models used for credit risk, interest rate risk and liquidity risk management, as well as balance sheet and capital planning. The position may supervise interns or lead small teams, providing performance feedback to management as appropriate. Guidance and direction are provided to less experienced personnel.
Primary Responsibilities- Lead research and development of quantitative behavioral models used for credit risk, interest rate risk and liquidity risk management, balance sheet and capital planning, including loan delinquency, default and loss models; loan prepayment and utilization models; deposit attrition models and financial instrument valuation methods.
- Prepare, manage and analyze large customer loan, deposit, or financial data sets for statistical analysis in Structured Query Language (SQL) or similar tools to properly specify and estimate econometric models.
- Run regressions (time‑series and logistic), programming routines and other econometric analyses using statistical software; communicate results, including graphic and tabular forms, to team members, Treasury management and bank‑wide stakeholders.
- Execute models in production, track portfolio and model performance, campaign tracking and risk strategy results; incorporate observations and data to improve predictive results.
- Develop, maintain and manage model documentation, including process narratives and performance monitoring guidelines.
- Lead financial analysis and data support to other groups/departments; conduct engagements with Model Risk Management for validation exercises.
- Provide guidance to less experienced personnel regarding all aspects of data analysis and model development.
- Conduct business in compliance with regulatory guidance (SR 10‑1, SR 10‑6, SR 11‑7, Enhanced Prudential Standards, etc.) and applicable controls.
- Serve as lead on Treasury projects, presenting data, results and recommendations to senior management.
- Understand and adhere to the company’s risk and regulatory standards; identify issues needing escalation.
- Promote an inclusive environment that reflects the M&T Bank brand.
- Maintain internal control standards, including timely implementation of audit points and regulatory issues.

The position serves as team lead in using statistical programming languages to analyze bank datasets, develop, implement and maintain behavioral models. Clear communication through narratives, data visualizations and precise technical work is essential. The role collaborates with Credit Risk Management, Asset Liability and Liquidity Management, Model Risk Management, and business lines to implement models for bank use. It leads team‑based projects, provides guidance to less experienced personnel, and is highly technical.
Supervision of interns or up to three investigators and feedback to management is expected.
- Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 4 years of proven quantitative behavioral modeling experience, or a combined 8 years of higher education and experience, including at least 4 years of modeling experience.
- Fluent in at least one open‑source language (R, Python).
- Experience in end‑to‑end model development lifecycle.
- Experience working directly with model users and stakeholders.
- Experience leading projects and initiatives involving other resources.
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience with statistical software packages (SAS, Python, Stata, R).
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience with data management environments such as SQL Server Management Studio.
