Position Overview

The State of Connecticut, Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) is hiring a Bilingual Spanish Speaking Professional Counselor to join the Young Adult Services Unit. Travel may be required. This role involves case management, needs assessment, and supportive counseling for vulnerable young adult clients, delivering integrated outpatient behavioral health care.

Responsibilities
  • Develop psychosocial assessments through clinical interviews with assigned clients and families, considering developmental, social, cultural, substance abuse, psychological, environmental, and medical issues.
  • Create and monitor treatment plans with measurable goals and objectives.
  • Document treatment and evaluate effectiveness in clinical records.
  • Provide individual, group, or family therapy; crisis intervention and risk assessment.
  • Advocate and develop networks of social and clinical services to meet client needs.
  • Write reports in accordance with agency and accrediting bodies.
  • Consult and collaborate with other behavioral health providers.
  • Comply with ethical standards and DMHAS work rules.
  • Maintain client and program safety.
  • Utilize electronic health records, computer technology, and data for job functions.
  • Observe all confidentiality and client rights regulations.
  • Provide CPR and first aid as necessary.
Knowledge, Skill and Ability
  • Knowledge of principles, methodology, casework and techniques of counseling, interviewing, and psychosocial assessment; family and interpersonal relationship dynamics; ethics of professional counseling; community resources.
  • Interpersonal skills.
  • Oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to develop and implement treatment plan with measurable goals that address client needs.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Licensure as a professional counselor in the State of Connecticut.

Preferred Qualifications

Bilingual in English and Spanish.

Special Requirements
  • Must possess and retain a license to practice professional counseling under Sec. 20-195 of the Connecticut General Statutes.
  • May be required to know sign language or communicate with deaf and hearing impaired in designated positions.
  • May be required to have ability in Spanish oral and written communication in certain positions.
  • May be required to travel.

May be exposed to some risk of injury from assaultive and/or abusive clients.
