Position Overview
The Connecticut Department of Correction seeks experienced Registered Nurses to serve as Supervising Nurses in our Health Services Unit across multiple correctional facilities. Candidates will lead nursing staff on first, second, and third shift assignments.

- Schedule, assign, oversee, and review the work of nursing staff.
- Ensure quality care consistent with standards and objectives.
- Provide clinical guidance to nursing staff.
- Select, develop, motivate, and evaluate staff.
- Conduct performance evaluations.
- Monitor quality of documentation, records, and other service information.
- Ensure resources are available to provide quality services.
- Participate in policy development for health care program efficiency.
- Contribute to long‑range health care planning.
- Act as liaison with other units, agencies, and outside organizations.
- Prepare reports and correspondence.
- Respond to psychiatric or medical emergencies.
- Provide inmate care when required.
- Assist custodial forces in emergencies, including physical restraint of inmates.
- Perform related duties as required.
- Four (4) years of experience as a Registered Nurse.
- Two (2) years of general experience at the level of Head Nurse, Head Nurse (Correctional Facility), Forensic Head Nurse, or Clinical Nurse Coordinator.
- A Bachelor’s degree in nursing may substitute for one (1) year of the general experience.
- A Master’s degree in nursing may substitute for one (1) additional year of the general experience.
- Supervisory experience.
- Emergency/Medical surgery experience.
- Experience working in a correctional facility.
Incumbents must possess and retain a current license or temporary permit as a Registered Nurse in Connecticut or a Multistate/Compact RN license. Candidates may need experience with adolescents or in women’s health or mental health care, fluency in a foreign language, or proficiency in American Sign Language for certain positions. A valid Motor Vehicle Operator’s license may be required, and travel may be necessary.
Physical RequirementsCandidates must be in good general health with sufficient stamina, agility, and visual and auditory acuity. A physical examination is required.
