Position: Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) (37.5 Hour)

Introduction

The Qualified Craft Worker (HVACR) will perform comprehensive heating, ventilation, air conditioning, and refrigeration maintenance, repair, installation, and modification tasks at the Housatonic Campus in Bridgeport, CT.

Examples of Duties
  • Perform HVACR tasks in accordance with standard trade practices and codes.
  • Operate, maintain, repair, install, modify, and assemble air conditioning and refrigeration equipment.
  • Determine required cooling capacity of units needed for small areas and use psychometric charts.
  • Control and measure air flow, room air changes, and room pressurization.
  • Monitor computerized control systems.
  • Perform minor tests for fuel specific gravity and gas leaks.
  • Add water treatment chemicals to boilers.
  • Make estimates of time and personnel, and determine and obtain required materials on assigned tasks.
  • Keep necessary records.
  • Act as liaison with other operating units and outside contacts.
  • May install, modify, repair and assemble electrical or pneumatic controls for HVACR equipment.
  • May perform duties related to similar trade areas as required.
  • Respond to fire and/or crash emergency situations at state owned airports.

Minimum Qualifications – General Experience

Four (4) years of experience in tasks in the heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration trade.

Minimum Qualifications – Special Experience

Two (2) years of the general experience must have been performing skilled HVACR trade duties.

Substitutions Allowed
  • Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma that designates completion of subject requirements in a maintenance trade area may be substituted for two (2) years of general experience.
  • Completion of the UConn Facilities Internship Training Program may be substituted for the general and special experience.
  • Two (2) years of experience as a Qualified Craft Worker Trainee in a designated maintenance trade area may be substituted for the general and special experience.
  • Experience performing technical duties within the HVACR trade area on a military base, aircraft carrier or large compound may be substituted for the general and special experience on a year-for-year basis.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Commercial/industrial level HVACR equipment experience: troubleshooting, installation and repair.
  • Experience using and troubleshooting Building Automation Systems and Digital Direct Controls.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing oil and gas fired commercial boilers with a minimum BTU rating of 1,400,000.
  • Experience troubleshooting and repairing commercial/industrial RTU HVAC units with a minimum cooling capacity of 10 tons.
  • Possession of an S2 and/or D2 or higher license.
  • Experience with chiller operation and cooling towers.
Special Requirements

Incumbents in this class must possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications, including a State of Connecticut heating, piping, and/or cooling license. They may be required to acquire and retain additional certifications as directed by the appointing authority.

Character Requirements

For state airport positions, a thorough background investigation may be conducted before appointment.

Physical Requirements
  • Adequate physical strength, stamina, agility and visual and auditory acuity.
  • May need to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
  • A physical examination may be required.
Working Conditions
  • May be required to lift moderate to heavy weights and use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
  • May be exposed to risk of injury from equipment, extreme weather conditions, and environmental conditions.
  • Completion of hazardous materials training programs (e.g., asbestos, PCB, PFAS) may be required.
