Position: Social Worker - Social And Human Services (Hybrid)

Introduction

The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF) is recruiting full‑time Social Workers (40 hours per week, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.). Our mission is to partner with communities and empower families to raise resilient children who thrive by sharpening the safety focus through prevention across the child welfare system.

Responsibilities

Social Workers will provide intensive supportive social case‑work services to an assigned caseload, including:

  • Obtain medical, physical, and social histories of clients to provide maximum services.
  • Confers with clients, relatives, professional associates, and other social welfare agencies regarding case problems.
  • Provide counseling services to an assigned caseload, including individuals, families, children, and youth.
  • Identify and arrange employment, housing, financial assistance, and other services for clients.
  • Prepare case histories, forms, and reports, and conduct investigations and evaluations.
  • Consult with medical, psychological, and other staff to develop treatment plans.
  • Recruit and select foster and adoptive homes for placement of children.
  • Supervise volunteer workers (as applicable) and collaborate with community groups for referrals and resources.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • In depth knowledge of the principles, techniques, and methods of professional social work.
  • Understanding of economic, emotional, medical, psychological, and social factors influencing individuals and families.
  • Knowledge of community resources available to clients.
  • Strong interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply social work policies and prepare clear, concise reports and case histories.
Minimum Qualifications – General Experience
  • Master's degree in social work or a closely related field and one year of experience in self‑directed case‑management and counseling, or
  • Bachelor's degree in social work or a closely related field and two years of experience in self‑directed case‑management and counseling.

Closely related fields include applied sociology, child development, child welfare, clinical psychology, counseling, human development and family studies, human services, marriage and family therapy, nursing, social and/or human services, education, and criminal justice.

Minimum Qualifications – Substitutions Allowed

Successful completion of the Social Worker Trainee program may be substituted for the general experience requirement.

Special Requirements
  • Completion of all degree requirements before appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
  • Ability to travel as required.
  • Possible requirement to speak a foreign language.
  • Fluent communication in American Sign Language for certain positions (e.g., Department of Aging and Disability Services).
