Position: UHC: Registered Nurse, 7N (Cardiac/Resp/MedSurg) (Day)

Overview

This position has the authority, responsibility, and shift accountability for the delivery of nursing care through the nursing process. The incumbent accepts accountability, applies competent clinical knowledge and independent nursing judgment for care provided by self and by health care providers to whom care is delegated to achieve quality patient care outcomes.

The role requires novice-level knowledge and skills to provide care relevant to the patient(s) under their care and to apply growth and development principles across the life span. The incumbent must assess and interpret patient data to identify age-specific needs. This role provides professional nursing care for patients in an inpatient hospital setting.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
    • Current Registered Nurse license issued by the state in which services will be provided or current multi-state Registered Nurse license through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC).
    • Obtain certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire date.
  • Experience:
    • Less than 12 months of experience as a registered nurse.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Education, Certification, and/or Licensure:
    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing Degree (BSN).
Core Duties and Responsibilities

  • Demonstrates safety and continuity of care using documentation and handoff tools/processes.
  • Produces a plan of care using the nursing process: assessment, diagnoses, intervention, and evaluation of outcomes.

  • Provides education based on the patient’s unique learning needs.
  • Incorporates individual patient data in delivery of care.
  • Performs adequate patient assessment and documentation.
  • Demonstrates teach-back method to evaluate education effectiveness.

  • Participates in organizational patient-centered care model.
  • Documents problems and issues in the plan of care.
  • Demonstrates growth in caring for more complex patients with consultation from experienced colleagues.
  • Maintains accountability for delegated nursing care.
  • Recognizes scope of practice for interprofessional team members.
  • Participates in holistic, culturally sensitive data collection.
  • Assesses the impact of family dynamics on health and wellness.
  • Integrates the American Nursing Association (ANA) Code of Ethics to guide nursing practice.
  • Identifies discriminatory health care practices in culturally diverse populations.
  • Individualizes care based on beliefs, barriers, and readiness to learn.
  • Special Accreditation (if applicable)

    For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements: completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through case-based learning (CBLs), trainings, in-services, and competency validation.

  • The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health recommends minimizing manual patient lifting; safe handling includes 35 pounds. Transfers and lifting should use lift equipment or aids as indicated.
  • Heavy/Hard work: Lifting, moving, stooping, reaching, standing, walking, and carrying 40+ lbs.
  • Visual acuity within normal range.
  • Hearing within normal range for assessing breath sounds, bowel sounds, pulse, monitors, etc.
