American Traveler is seeking an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Oncology unit at a Level II Trauma facility, requiring a WV or compact RN license and at least 2 years of experience.
Requirements- Active WV or compact RN license required
- Current BLS certification (AHA) required
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Biotherapy certification is a strong plus
- Minimum 2 years of RN experience required
- BSN not required
- Experience with chest tubes and PleurX chest tubes is highly preferred
- Epic EMR experience preferred
- Ability to read and interpret telemetry strips required
- A copy of a valid, unexpired driver's license is required for consideration
- Acute care hospital setting at a Level II Trauma facility
- Unit is a 36-bed Med/Surg, Post-Op, Oncology, and Telemetry unit
- Patient population includes general Med/Surg patients, some Post-Op (lap chole, lap appy — no post-op ortho), oncology patients with complications (neutropenic precautions, pneumonia, infections), and occasional psych patients requiring 1:1 sitter coverage
- Nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:5–6
- Heparin is the only titratable drip — no cardiac drips
- Philips telemetry monitors are used; a central monitor tech covers the hospital, but RNs must be able to read and interpret strips independently
- CPAP and BiPap are available on the unit; managed by Respiratory Therapy
- Charting is done in Epic
- 12-hour day shifts (7a–7p); night shifts also available (7p–7a)
- Every-other-weekend requirement (Saturday and Sunday for both days and nights)
- Floating may be required to other Med/Surg or Telemetry units
- 13-week contract
- Permanent staff administer chemotherapy; travelers are not expected to administer chemo
- Experience with PleurX chest tubes is a significant advantage given the frequency of malignant patients discharged with them
- 3 CNAs are available on both day and night shifts
- Charge nurse coverage is available 24/7; charge nurses on days do not take a patient assignment, but night charge nurses do
- Travelers are integrated into the holiday rotation alongside permanent staff
- Royal blue scrubs are required; no false nails permitted
- Candidates must reside more than 50 miles from the facility to be eligible — local travelers are not accepted
- Travelers who have previously worked at any WVU Medicine location must have taken a 2-year break before reapplying
- Travelers may not work within the WVU system for more than one cumulative year before requiring a 2-year break
- Two references are required: one supervisor reference and one peer or additional supervisor reference (e.g., Charge RN)
- A skills checklist completed within the past year is required for consideration
