The EXCEL Program at Bridgewater State University (BSU) is a fully‑inclusive postsecondary program for young adults with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. Students in the EXCEL program share the same experiences as BSU undergraduate students in the areas of academics, socialization, professional development, self‑advocacy and independent living. The EXCEL Program offers three options for participation. With supports in place, BSU EXCEL students enroll in courses, take part in internships, socialize with peers and participate in campus clubs and activities.
The EXCEL program is proud to offer this student employment opportunity to undergraduate students interested in enhancing their academic experience here er graduate students interested in working in service‑oriented fields such as education, social work, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and counseling will truly benefit from the hands‑on experience they will gain through working with the students and staff in our program.
Education Coach Responsibilities- Provide 1:1 support to EXCEL student (Monday‑Friday, up to 20 hours per week)
- Attend and support EXCEL student in classes
- Attend and support EXCEL student in internships
- Collaborate with student and program staff at weekly check‑in meetings
- Meet bi‑weekly with EXCEL Staff for education coach check‑in meetings
- Assist student in utilizing campus resources
- Provide ongoing academic support (i.e. study skills, scheduling, organization and planning during academic year)
- Complete program data collection forms
- Attend trainings throughout the academic year
- Participate in program activities and events
- Complete and turn in weekly anticipated schedule on Friday each week
- Respond to substitute education coach opportunities in a timely manner
- Experience working with individuals with disabilities
- Sensitivity to student needs, concerns, and individual issues
- Flexibility, patience and high professional integrity
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations of students
- Energetic, self‑starter who can complete multiple tasks in a fast‑paced environment
- Valid driver’s license and safe driving record
- Ability to maintain strict confidentiality
- Fluency with Microsoft Office 365 and various social media platforms
