Position Description
- The Graduate Assistant (GA) will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring and 6 for summer.

Department Summary The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides academic advising for specific populations as well as learning assistance support to undergraduate students. The AAC also houses Student Accessibility Services, Testing Services, and Transfer Services. We dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.

Core Duties In this role, the candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • Serve as advisor to a diverse caseload of students including first semester freshmen in all majors, Undecided majors, Education and Psychology majors for their full first year, freshmen on academic probation, and will occasionally meet with students seeking a withdrawal. These meetings occur individually through scheduled appointments or drop-ins; in large and small groups; and via email or phone in an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Act as an advocate, first point of contact, and resource for students, faculty advisors, professional staff, etc.
  • Serve as advising resource to assist students in acclimating to college life, begin academic planning, and educate students on policies and procedures around withdrawals, GPA calculations, change of major, etc. as well as advising technologies including Degree Works, Info Bear, and EAB Navigate.
  • Refer students appropriately to supports, resources, and opportunities. Seek information on and collaborate with campus partners to stay abreast of programs and resources for students at BSU.
  • Assist with implementation of first year advising programming as well as individual advising for various student populations throughout the year. Offer feedback and suggestions for improvements to all advising programming through a social justice lens and with an eye towards the unique needs of each student.
  • Participate in advising and registration for new, incoming freshmen during orientation advising meetings including preparation of student records and individual student advising.
  • Assist with and participate in orientation sessions for Freshman Grade Point Recovery (FGPR) students.
  • Thoughtfully participate in weekly staff meetings, supervision meetings, and trainings and seek out additional trainings on topics relevant to field of study and topics such as cultural competence, equity, and inclusion.
  • Assist with projects, tasks, and/or research as directed by the Director or other area administrators in the Academic Achievement Center.

- Qualifications To succeed in this role, the candidate will need:

  • To have earned a Bachelor's Degree and be accepted to a graduate program at Bridgewater State University.
  • Experience and ability to work with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic backgrounds, and across all identities and demographics.
  • Commitment to customer service excellence/support to enhance an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively and professionally communicate with and present to a diverse student body, student family members, faculty, and staff.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment and to exercise discretion in handling confidential information.
  • Willingness and ability to learn advising software systems.
