Description:
The Graduate Assistant will work 20 hours per week and receive up to 24 credits of tuition and student fee waivers: 9 for fall, 9 for spring, and 6 for summer. The College of Graduate Studies (COGS) coordinates all of Bridgewater State University’s Graduate Assistantships.
Department Summary: The Academic Achievement Center (AAC) is the largest hub of student academic support services at Bridgewater State University. The AAC provides Academic Advising for specific populations as well as Learning Assistance support to undergraduate students. The AAC also houses Student Accessibility Services and Testing Services. Within Learning Assistance there are six main areas:
Academic Coaching, Accounting and Finance Lab, Math Services, Tutoring Central, Tutoring for Multilingual Students, and the Writing Studio. All areas within the AAC dedicate each day to student success and retention, as well as equity, diversity, and inclusion.
- Conduct writing consultations with English language learners.
- Provide drop-in English language support to undergraduate and graduate international and resident multilingual students.
- Create and find instructional English language materials appropriate for undergraduate and graduate‑level multilingual students.
- Connect with the Graduate Writing Fellows to provide support for working with English learners from different academic programs.
- Work at least three days a week, including one late afternoon/evening Monday through Wednesday.
- Assist in the hiring process, participate in interviews of tutor applicants, and assist with the final selection of new consultants.
- Collect tutor availability and match with students requesting services.
- Participate in ENGL 205 Supporting Multilingual Learners.
- Manage tutor schedules and appointments through Accudemia, an online appointment‑based platform.
- Work with supervisor to design a research project to be presented at the College of Graduate Studies Research Symposium in the spring semester.
- Proctor placement testing, as needed, for new students (freshmen and transfer) on Saturdays and early evenings from mid‑April through the beginning of June.
- Create and distribute public relations materials.
- Perform other professional tasks as assigned by administrators in the Academic Achievement Center.
- Maintain regular contact with the TMS supervisor.
- Actively advance a culture of accessibility, inclusivity, anti‑racism, disability rights and advocacy throughout the AAC and Bridgewater State University community.
- Thoughtfully participate in weekly staff meetings, supervision meetings, and trainings, and seek out additional trainings on topics relevant to the field of study and topics such as cultural competence, equity, and inclusion.
- Model best tutoring strategies for new tutors in accordance with the TMS philosophy and methods.
- With the director, monitor mental health of tutors and students.
- Help tutors make referrals to the appropriate resources.
- Applicants must have a bachelor’s degree (preferably in English, Linguistics, Communications, or Communication Disorders) and must be accepted to a graduate program at Bridgewater State University.
- Ability to work with diverse populations, including students with learning disabilities and other disabilities, students of color, multilingual students, non‑binary and transgender students, and non‑traditional students.
- Ability to work well with others, and an ability to provide language support for both graduate and undergraduate second language students.
- Self‑motivated with the capacity to work without direct supervision is required.
- Experience working with language learners in an instructional setting.
- Typing.
