Associate Scientist - Downstream

Overview

Avantor is seeking an Associate Scientist – Downstream for the Bridgewater, NJ location. The Associate Scientist – Downstream will be responsible for the hands‑on execution of laboratory experiments for the protein purification process and contribute to the development and optimization of processes.

• Execute and support downstream purification (e.g., monoclonal antibodies, fusion proteins, etc.) on a bench‑scale jointly with other scientists or independently.
• Conduct pilot‑scale material generations with the team.
• Prepare and execute experimental protocols and analytical test methods under general guidance.
• Accurately document all procedures and observations.
• Maintain laboratory area, utilize safe practices while working in the laboratory environment as per EHS guidelines and policy.

Additional responsibilities include:

• Execute bench‑scale purification of biologics (monoclonal antibodies, bispecific, fusion proteins, or AAV) independently or in collaboration with other scientists.
• Support pilot‑scale material generation and assist in technology transfer activities.
• Prepare and execute experimental protocols and analytical methods under general guidance.
• Contribute to the development and optimization of downstream processes.
• Identify and resolve process development challenges through data‑driven experimentation and innovative thinking.
• Analyze, interpret, and summarize experimental data; present findings clearly in team meetings and contribute to project decision‑making.
• Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot laboratory instruments in accordance with SOPs.
• Ensure accurate documentation of procedures and observations.
• Assess Avantor’s technologies—such as chromatographic resins, process additives, and single‑use technologies—for their effectiveness in biologics purification workflows.
• Ensure all activities comply with safety, environmental, and quality standards and best practices.

• Education:
  
  Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biotechnology, or a related scientific field.
• Experience:
  
  Hands‑on experience with protein purification techniques and downstream processing preferred.
• Familiarity with Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and laboratory safety standards.
• Strong background in molecular biology, biochemistry, or bioengineering.
• Strong communication skills.
• Ability to understand and follow scientific protocols, policies and procedures.
• Flexible, forward‑thinking, and motivated.
• Ability to act independently and manage responsibilities while following scientific direction.
• Ability to lift 25 lbs minimum.
• Basic computing skills, including Microsoft Office Suite (or equivalent).
• Skilled at prioritizing tasks, problem solving, and meeting deadlines.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills.
• Ability to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.

Salary: $69,000.00 – $ pre‑tax (actual pay may differ depending on relevant factors such as prior experience and geographic location).
