OverviewAn established engineering and building technologies organisation is looking to appoint a technically minded Sales Engineer to support the continued growth of its Building Automation and Smart Building division.
This is a consultative sales position centred around developing and securing opportunities from an existing client portfolio, service agreements, referrals and internal business channels. Rather than focusing on cold calling, the successful candidate will work closely with customers to understand operational challenges, recommend appropriate automation solutions and guide projects from initial enquiry through to contract award.
The ideal candidate will combine strong technical knowledge with excellent communication skills and enjoy working with clients to deliver practical, value-driven solutions.
Key Responsibilities Business Development & Opportunity Management- Manage and develop qualified sales opportunities for building automation upgrades, control system modernisation, energy efficiency projects and HVAC controls.
- Build technical and commercial proposals that meet customer objectives while maximising project value.
- Identify opportunities to expand existing customer relationships through additional products, services and system enhancements.
- Guide projects through each stage of the sales cycle, from qualification and solution development to quotation and award.
- Work collaboratively with internal technical and operational teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Carry out site surveys, system reviews and customer consultations across commercial, industrial and institutional facilities.
- Produce budgets, estimates, scopes of work and formal proposals for automation and controls projects.
- Recommend integrated building control solutions that improve performance, reliability, energy efficiency and occupant comfort.
- Present technical concepts clearly to a wide range of stakeholders, including facilities teams, consultants, contractors and senior decision-makers.
- Provide advice on modern control strategies, system upgrades and lifecycle planning.
- Develop long-term partnerships with existing and prospective customers.
- Act as the primary commercial contact throughout the sales process.
- Ensure a high level of customer satisfaction by maintaining regular communication and coordinating effectively with engineering and project delivery teams.
- Understand customer operational requirements and provide tailored recommendations.
- Maintain accurate records of customer interactions, quotations and project progress within the company's CRM platform.
- Produce reliable sales forecasts and maintain an organised sales pipeline.
- Meet individual sales and profitability objectives through consistent opportunity conversion and account development.
- Ensure quotations and follow-up activities are completed promptly.
- Keep up to date with developments in building automation, HVAC controls, smart building technologies and energy management.
- Maintain awareness of relevant industry standards, legislation and best practice.
- Represent the business at networking events, exhibitions and customer meetings where appropriate.
The successful candidate will ideally have:
- A degree or equivalent qualification in Engineering, Building Services or a related technical discipline.
- Experience with in Building Automation, HVAC controls, Building Management Systems (BMS/BAS) or related building technologies.
- Previous experience preparing estimates, technical proposals and commercial quotations.
- Knowledge of one or more major building automation platforms from recognised manufacturers.
- Good understanding of HVAC systems, DDC controls and building services engineering.
- Experience using CRM software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- A consultative sales approach with the ability to explain technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Excellent organisational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
- Knowledge of energy efficiency principles and building industry standards would be advantageous.
