Mentors for New Teachers
* Mentors are assigned for new teachers who are working toward their Standard Certificate as required by the NJDOE.
Qualifications:
Applicants must have a summative rating of Effective or Highly Effective Practice. Tenured Staff Preferred.
Requirements:
Requirements as established by the NJDOE, which includes required Mentor Training annually (for each school year a teacher is serving as a mentor).
Salary:
Consistent with state guidelines.
The Bridgewater-Raritan Teacher Mentor Program is one component of the District's professional development programs and it represents the District's strong belief that the most important element in the education of children is the teacher. The purposes of the Bridgewater-Raritan Teacher Mentor Program are as follows:
* To provide peer guidance to Bridgewater-Raritan teachers in the first year of employment;
* To increase the probability of a first year teacher having a successful start to his/her career;
* To provide new teachers with information about district and building policies and procedures related to pedagogy and classroom and school management;
* To provide new teachers with informal feedback about their pedagogy;
* To provide the opportunity for the mentor and the novice teacher to reflect upon their practice;
* To provide new teachers with information about the Bridgewater-Raritan curricula, new curriculum initiatives and best practices; and
* To provide an opportunity for the mentor to work with the building principal in facilitating leadership in curriculum and instruction.
Specifically, the role of the mentor teacher includes the following:
* Provide support and encouragement to help the new teacher understand the history, customs and culture of the school district and his/her school building;
* Provide the teacher new support related to subject and course curricula, instructional strategies, classroom management, report card grading, building and district policies and procedures, parental contacts and any and all other topics that may be of importance in the performance of the new teacher's duties;
* Maintain confidentiality of all discussions, observations and other contacts between the mentor and the new teacher;
* Participate in the evaluation process of the teacher mentor program;
* Meet with the new teacher before the beginning of the school year to initiate the teacher/mentor relationship;
* Meet with the new teacher during the school year to provide counsel and support to the new teacher;
* Provide instructional and building resources or direct the new teacher to such;
* Model competence and professionalism;
* Demonstrate tolerance, patience, and sensitivity to the novice teacher's concerns;
* Serve as an advocate/advisor;
* Guide the new teacher in recognizing special talents, qualities, and capabilities while addressing the novice teacher's shortcomings and working together to find remedies;
* Assist the new teacher in identifying effective strategies and experimenting with new ideas;
* Facilitate a compatible working relationship with the new teacher by discussing expectations and arriving at a mutual understanding of how to best work together;
* Assess the background of the new teacher and provide the type and amount of support required by this background;
* Orient the new teacher to district and school policies, procedures and expectations;
* Consult with the inductee on instructional processes and strategies - teaching for mastery, the curriculum planning process, lesson presentation and assessment design and alternatives;
* On invitation, visit the new teacher's classroom and provide feedback, coaching and support;
* Demonstrate, as needed, varied instructional strategies and approaches in his/her classroom for the new teacher to observe;
* Consult with the new teacher on classroom schedule, management, discipline, and room environment;
* Consult, as the need arises, with the new teacher on any other topics necessary for functioning effectively in the classroom;
* Serve as a daily resource, and assist in addressing ongoing needs; and
* Discuss, reflect on, and complete the necessary paperwork (monthly log) required of this position.
