GENERAL PURPOSE
Performs building inspections for Box Elder County and those communities which are under contract, including all phases such as structural, plumbing, electrical, mechanical, as provided by law.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Works under the general supervision of the Chief Building Official/Facility Manager.

Example of Duties- Perform duties as deputy to building official as directed
- Review all building plans to determine their compliance to the codes
- Issue building permits, collect fees, issue receipts, etc.
- Perform all building inspections as per State and County Building Codes
- Meet with owners, contractors, etc., and explain building code requirements, violations, etc.; verify that construction is being performed as per standards set in building codes; ensure citizens are protected and obtain a safe structure as per the codes
- Enforce all county and applicable city zoning, mobile home and subdivision ordinances in areas of concern
- Keep a record of all inspections performed
- Assist the Board of Appeals on all appeal cases and attend Board of Appeal meetings that apply to involved cases
- Continuously update and stay current on building code requirements
- Perform miscellaneous maintenance on county buildings as requested
- Other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications – Building Inspector I
- A. High School Education – College graduation not required but helpful.
- B. Two years of experience in the building industry, one year working as building inspector, and one or more ICC certifications in electrical, building, mechanical, plumbing, plan checking, etc.
- C. Any equivalent combination of education and experience in the building trades.
- ICC Residential Certification.
- Must be a State licensed inspector in at least one area (Electrical, Mechanical, Structural, Plumbing, Plan Checker) and licensed with the Department of Commerce in Utah as a building inspector.
- Must be able to work well with the public and handle volatile situations with diplomacy and patience.
- Must be able to access tight areas, climb ladders and scaffolds during inspections.
- Frequently required to stand, walk and talk and/or hear; occasionally required to sit; use hands to handle or operate tools; reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl; run, taste or smell.
- Occasionally lift or move more than 100 pounds. Specific vision required: close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception.
- Must possess a valid and current driver’s license.
- Must pass a pre‑employment drug test.
- Must be licensed with Utah State Department of Commerce Division:
Occupational & Professional Licensing as building inspector.
- Formal application; initial screening interview; reference check; final interview with hiring authority.

- B. Four years of experience in the building industry, at least one year working as building inspector, four ICC/State certifications (structural, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, plan checker) and at least one additional certification.
