Performs a variety of skilled work in the operation and maintenance of heavy mechanized equipment during Road maintenance, gravel operations, and any and all excavation, all with due regard for the safety of self, other employees and the public.
SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the general supervision of the Road Department Superintendent or Operations Supervisor.
SUPERVISION EXERCISEDEquipment Operator may oversee the general duties and specifications of laying gravel, changing a pipe, shouldering a paved road, and other duties as required.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES- Operates specialized equipment such as graders, bulldozers, loaders, rock crushers, and other similar equipment.
- Will be able to safely climb stairs and use handholds or railings to gain access to Dozers, loaders, graders, and rock crusher.
- Operator is responsible for the pre-operator check, post-operator check and performs general maintenance of heavy equipment in the course of his daily duties. Maintenance could include but is not limited to the changing of tires, filters, hoses, greasing, checking fluid and fuel levels, etc. and other general maintenance tasks.
- Keeps records of all pre-operation, post-operation and other maintenance performed on equipment. If major repair is needed it is the Operator’s responsibility to immediately notify the Mechanic foreman and or Supervisor of the problem.
- Possesses skills to enable professional daily interaction with fellow employees and the public sector.
- Operator will gain a working knowledge of gravel pit operation and be required to work in all aspects of the process.
- The Operator will also be required to gain a working knowledge of Wildland firefighting basics as it applies to putting in fire breaks with graders or dozers.
- The operator will also be required to utilize a CDL class A driver’s license with tanker endorsement. The equipment operator will have additional duties driving belly dump, end dump, and water truck.
- May work in the shops to help assist the mechanics in maintenance activitiesunder the shop foreman’s supervision.
- Performs other duties as assigned within the County.
Education and Experience:
- Graduation from high school or equivalent with experience in basic diesel mechanics.
- One (1) year of closely related experience in the above duties,
- Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Skill in the operation and use of tools related to basic equipment maintenance and repair; and the use of welding equipment.
- Must have a good working knowledge of the principles, practices and techniques of heavy mechanized equipment operation; working knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to heavy equipment operation.
- Ability to operate heavy mechanized equipment of various kinds under varying conditions; ability to act independently; ability to understand and carry out instructions relative to job assignments; ability to perform strenuous labor for extended periods of time.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationship with employees,other departments, and the public.
- Ability to work alone or with a small crew in the west desert area of Box Elder County with minimal supervision.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand and hear. Must be able to do strenuous labor for extended periods of time such as lifting 60 pounds, shoveling, pushing, etc.
WORKINGCONDITIONS
Must be able to work outside in all types of weather conditions i.e. cold, heat, wind, dust, snow, rain, etc.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTSMust be available for snow removal as required.
Will certify in CPR and First Aid Administration.
To qualify as Grade 23 position requires possessing a Utah Class A Commercial Driver License with tanker Endorsement.
All employees who require a CDL license to perform their job function will be testing following the controlled substances and alcohol use and testing for the Federal Highway Administration 49
