Position: Substitute Paraprofessional - District Wide - SD27J for the 2026-27 School Year

Supervise preschool and school‑age children and activities under the supervision of certified teachers. Maintain cleanliness and safety of the classroom, prepare instructional materials, provide snacks, and change diapers and clothes as needed. Provide support to students with moderate to severe physical or cognitive disabilities in general and special education classes and in the community.

Salary: $18.31 – $21.34 per hour based on assignment. No benefits. On‑call, as needed, no guarantee of hours.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Modify materials and academic environment for inclusion of special education students in a general education classroom with guidance from general and special education teachers.
  • Assist students with personal care needs, including toileting, diapering, toileting, self‑care (e.g., brushing teeth, washing face and hands, changing clothes, etc.), eating and tube feeding, transportation, and communication.
  • Assist students with physical and/or occupational therapy needs, including positioning, stretching, transitioning, and using specialized adaptive equipment.
  • Provide direct instruction to students under the direction of the Special Education Teacher or other Related Service Providers in accordance with their Individualized Education Plan (IEP).
  • Follow prescribed behavior support plans throughout school, community, and extracurricular activities, including monitoring the playground to ensure safety and security of students.
  • Maintain required forms and records as requested by the Special Education Teacher and/or Related Services Providers.
  • De‑escalate students as needed using approved CPI measures and the prescribed Behavior Intervention Plan.
  • Communicate observations, concerns, activities, and progress with the Special Education Teacher and other therapists and specialists.
  • Sanitize classroom and equipment using approved materials.
  • Supervise children and activities in a classroom environment, ensuring safety and security of children while providing direct instruction and academic support for both general education and students with disabilities in accordance with their IEP.
  • Prepare instructional materials for small and large group daily activities and nutritional snacks. Modify materials and assist with lesson plans for inclusion of special education students in a general education classroom. Provide in‑class support for students and adapt lesson modifications as needed or directed.
  • Assist general education students and students with special needs with toileting, diapering, self‑care, eating, tube feeding, transportation, and communication.
  • Assist students with physical needs, including positioning and transitioning students using specialized adaptive equipment.
  • Supervise children entering and exiting the bus, during recess, and on field trips.
Qualifications
  • At least 18 years of age.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • CPR and First Aid certification preferred at time of hire or ability to obtain within 2 months of hire date.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds.
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as behavior plans, IEPs, staff and student handbooks.
  • Ability to collect data, write routine reports, and simple correspondences.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from general or special education teachers and related services providers.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and handle a variety of concrete variables in situations where standardization is limited.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work with disabled students requiring various academic personal care needs.
  • Skills in crisis management, flexibility, patience, and ability to maintain composure under stressful conditions.
  • Ability to work independently while following directives and completing tasks.
Required Experience
  • Experience working with students with disabilities preferred.
