Hourly salary ranges:

  • Fleet Mechanic I: $26.23 – $27.80
  • Fleet Mechanic II: $28.86 – $30.59
  • Fleet Mechanic III: $33.75 – $35.78
Definition

Perform a wide variety of maintenance and repairs to gasoline and diesel‑powered automotive, light, medium and heavy‑duty truck, various sizes and types of construction and other power‑driven and non‑powered equipment. This position must work well independently and most importantly, communicate and work as a team with all Fleet Department and City staff members, providing excellent, supportive and respectful customer service and human relations skills that support the City of Brighton's mission and values.

Supervision

Received and Exercised

Receives general supervision from the Fleet Manager or Fleet Staff Supervisor Designee.

Responsibilities Fleet Mechanic / Technician I
  • Provides friendly customer service and advice, which may include training operators in the proper use of mechanical equipment.
  • Works with the Fleet Manager and fellow employees in scheduling workflow for a smooth and successful Fleet Department operation.
  • Inspects, diagnoses and locates mechanical difficulties in automobiles, trucks and various diesel and gasoline‑powered maintenance equipment.
  • Road‑tests, inspects and troubleshoots automotive, light‑duty trucks and equipment to assess condition and determine repairs.
  • Performs scheduled maintenance and inspections of vehicles.
  • Repairs, adjusts and replaces brake systems on light‑duty vehicles, including disc and hydraulic brakes.
  • Keeps electronic records of work performed, time and materials used per job.
  • Provides assistance to other technicians and personnel when needed.
Fleet Mechanic / Technician II
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs or replaces electrical components such as starting/charging systems, emergency/non‑emergency lighting, various electrical and computer‑controlled components.
  • Adjusts, repairs, replaces or rebuilds fuel system components.
  • Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs or replaces components on various models of hydraulic, air or electronic braking systems, including computer‑controlled braking systems.
  • Diagnoses, repairs and replaces suspension and steering components.
  • Uses welding, cutting and fabrication equipment to make repairs or modify equipment.
  • Performs limited repairs on gasoline and diesel engines and drivetrain.
  • Performs limited repairs on automatic and manual transmissions, differentials, power‑take‑off drives, clutches and related drivetrain components.
  • Orders materials and supplies required for maintenance and repair work.
  • Keeps electronic records of work performed, time and materials used per job.
  • Performs on‑site field repairs to stationary or disabled equipment.
  • Diagnoses and repairs small engines.
Fleet Mechanic / Technician III
  • Installs police and special emergency equipment on new vehicles, both light and heavy‑duty, before entering service.
  • Trains, mentors and assists other technicians. Oversees fellow workers on jobs requiring more than one person.
  • Maintains awareness of new trends and technologies in automotive and heavy equipment repair.
  • Maintains work, time and materials records.
  • May act as Fleet Manager, Supervisor or Lead in the absence of the same.
Other Duties I‑III

May be required to perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications Knowledge of:
  • Operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light to heavy‑duty vehicles and equipment.
  • Operation of internal combustion engines and hydraulic‑operated equipment.
  • Methods, materials, equipment and tools used in routine welding and fabrication work.
  • Tools, equipment and procedures used in repair and maintenance of gas and diesel‑powered equipment.
  • Maintaining an effective working relationship with Fleet Operations Staff, City employees, external customers and vendors.
  • Safe working practices, rules and regulations.
Ability to:
  • Perform a full range of equipment mechanical work including troubleshooting gasoline and diesel‑powered equipment for major and minor repair work.
  • Work independently in the absence of supervision.
  • Accurately determine mechanical repair needs and estimate cost and time of repairs.
  • Use a variety of tools and equipment with skill.
