Job Description & How to Apply Below

We are working with a well-established design-build general contractor based in Brighton, Michigan to find a Senior Construction Accountant to own the day-to-day accounting for the business. This company has been building since 1997 with a culture built around planning, accountability, and doing things the right way. They operate across healthcare, retail, office, auto dealership, mixed-use, and industrial sectors and are licensed to build in 35 states.

Their core values are straightforward: put the project first, be the problem solver, operate with honesty and integrity, be respectful, and bring a 100-0 mindset to everything you do.

The person in this seat personally executes the daily accounting work, from project billing and transaction processing through month-end close and routine reporting, and is the one leadership counts on for accurate, reliable numbers. Project Managers stay responsible for project budgets, progress assessments, and cost-to-complete estimates, and management retains payment approval and financing decisions, so this role can stay focused on running the books well.

If you are a construction accountant who likes owning the work rather than delegating it, this is a strong fit.

What You'll Do
  • Own the full accounting cycle for a design-build general contractor, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, general ledger, and month-end close
  • Prepare and process project billings, including AIA-style progress billings, schedules of values, retainage, and lien waivers
  • Process subcontractor and vendor invoices, verify against contracts and purchase orders, and manage payment runs for management approval
  • Reconcile bank accounts, credit cards, and balance sheet accounts on a monthly basis
  • Maintain job cost records and post costs to the correct projects, phases, and cost codes
  • Produce routine financial and job cost reporting for leadership, including work-in-progress schedules, over and under billings, and monthly financial statements
  • Support Project Managers with cost data and billing status so they can manage budgets and cost-to-complete
  • Process payroll or coordinate with the payroll provider, including certified payroll where required
  • Maintain sales and use tax filings, 1099 preparation, and other routine compliance items
  • Coordinate with the company's outside CPA on year-end close, tax matters, and specialized accounting questions
  • Maintain organized, audit-ready accounting records and documentation
  • Identify and implement improvements to accounting processes and controls as the company grows
What You'll Bring
  • 5 or more years of hands-on accounting experience, with meaningful time in construction accounting
  • Direct experience personally handling both project billing and company-level accounting, not just one or the other
  • Solid general ledger and month-end close experience
  • Working knowledge of construction-specific accounting, including job costing, progress billing, retainage, lien waivers, and WIP reporting
  • Proficiency with construction accounting software such as Sage, Foundation, Viewpoint, or similar, and strong Excel skills
  • Strong attention to detail and the organizational discipline to keep routine reporting accurate and on time
  • Clear communication skills, comfortable working with Project Managers, vendors, subcontractors, and ownership
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred, or equivalent experience
  • Backgrounds that fit well: senior accountant, construction accounting manager, full-charge construction bookkeeper, or an experienced project accountant with real GL and close experience. A controller title is neither required nor disqualifying; what you have actually done matters more
What You'll Gain
  • A competitive salary of $75,000 to $90,000, based on experience
  • Direct access to ownership and leadership, with your work feeding the decisions they make
  • Clear scope boundaries so you can focus on doing the accounting well, with outside CPA support for specialized and tax matters
  • Company-sponsored health insurance and company-matched 401(k)
  • Flexible vacation, sick, and time-off policy along with performance-based bonus opportunities
  • A culture built on planning, accountability, and treating people with respect
