Position

* City-wide Elementary Art - PreK - Grade 5, Split between Hubbell School (.6) and Edgewood School (.4)

REPORTS TO:

BUILDING PRINCIPAL

SUMMARY:

To develop in each pupil an interest in and the ability for creative expression in visual terms using skills and techniques of artistic expression appropriate to the pupil's interests and abilities; to develop aesthetic understandings and appreciations; to discover and develop talents of pupils in the field of art.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Other duties may be assigned.

* Teaches knowledge and skills in art, including mac/digital technology, drawing, painting, lettering, design, commercial art, art history, and three-dimensional art, following the course of study adopted by the Board of Education and other appropriate learning activities.

* Provides instruction by which pupils develop aesthetic concepts and appreciations and the ability to make qualitative judgments about art and its connection to our global society and potential careers.

* Demonstrates techniques in activities such as drawing, painting and modeling using standard and teacher-prepared instructional aids.

* Develop instructional plans and organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration and working time.

* Provides individual and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils with varying intellectual and artistic abilities and to accommodate a variety of instructional activities.

* Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior needed to provide an orderly and productive studio environment.

* Instruct pupils in proper care and use of tools and equipment.

* Organizes storage areas and controls use of materials, equipment and tools to prevent loss or abuse and to minimize time required for distribution and collection.

* Evaluates each pupil's performance and growth in knowledge and aesthetic understandings and prepares progress reports.

* Selects and requisitions instructional materials, tools, instructional aids and maintains required inventory records.

* Plans and presents art displays and exhibitions designed to exhibit pupils' work for the school and the community.

* May sponsor exhibits from outside the school.

* Maintains professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.

* Maintains an auditable record of pupil attendance and makes daily reports of pupils absent each period.

* Communicates with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.

* Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school or on a district level.

* Implements an individual education program for special needs students.

* Collaborate with community partners and resident artists to enhance student learning

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:

* Supervises classroom and students (volunteers and parent helpers where appropriate). Performs general supervisory duties as scheduled.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

EDUCATION AND/OR

EXPERIENCE:

* Bachelor Degree.
* (Masters Degree for certain positions).

* Additional credits required for completion of certification requirements.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

* Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate (042, PK-12 Art).

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

* Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

* Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

COMPUTER

SKILLS:

* Knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications. Ability to use computers for E-mail, word processing, accounting, databases and presentations.

REASONING ABILITY:
