DEPARTMENTTEACHER
REPORTS TOHIGH SCHOOL PRINCIPAL
SUMMARYTo achieve and maintain standards of excellence in assigned area so that each student may derive maximum benefit from their educational program. Serve as a teacher/leader for their assigned area.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESOther duties may be assigned.
Assist the administration in recruitment, screening, hiring and training of department personnel.
Prepare departmental budget and manage department expenditures including ordering, inventorying and distributing of all departmental materials.
Establish and maintain district curriculum objectives.
Participate in departmental curricular revision and rewriting with the curriculum committee.
Observe each teacher in the department at least once per year to ensure implementation of curriculum and content area instruction.
Provide orientation and in-service training programs for new department personnel, specifically in regard to subject area curriculum.
Develop and provide professional development to department members in conjunction with the administration.
Chair, coordinate and facilitate all department meetings.
Promote interdisciplinary programs.
Identify and use community resources for the department program.
Serve as a member of the mentor support team for beginning and new teachers.
Attend relevant school, district and professional meetings.
Provide course outlines based on curriculum objectives for all department offerings.
Analyze multiple student data as a means for improving instruction.
Assist colleagues in identifying, collecting and analyzing student data.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCEMasters Degree.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONSValid Connecticut Teaching Certificate.
Connecticut Department Chair or Administrative Certificate preferred.
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
COMPUTER SKILLSBasic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications. Ability to use computers for E-mail, word processing, accounting, databases and presentations.
REASONING ABILITYAbility to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
OTHERSKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to instructional programs. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned. Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents. Skill in oral and written communication. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.
