Position: Department Head/Coordinator- Special Education (Stipend)

Coordinator Head -- A1 Special Education Department

To achieve and maintain standards of excellence in assigned area so that each student may derive maximum benefit from their educational program. Serve as a teacher/leader for their assigned area.

Essential duties and responsibilities include:

  • Determine case managers for all special education referrals.
  • Set up the initial PPT on the calendar and support the case manager in the referral process.
  • Discuss potential referrals to special ed with counselors and ensure completion of required forms.
  • Co-chair SRBI with building admin team and counselors for students in SRBI for tiered levels of intervention.
  • Review IEPs and reports to identify placement in special education classes for incoming students.
  • Transitional liaison for special education 9th grade students.
  • Manage and maintain a master list of all special education students, their case manager, and their related services.
  • Assist building administrators in scheduling special education classes and courses.
  • Support case managers in day to day tasks.
  • Provide support to regular education teacher in adherence and implementation of accommodations and modifications.
  • Participate in interview panels.
  • Partake and collaborate in monthly school leadership team meetings.
  • Ensure required data is collected from department.
  • Conduct and facilitate department meetings.
  • Collaborate and maintain an ongoing discussion with the special education supervisor.
  • Daily oversight of paraprofessional schedules.
  • Collaboration and scheduling with the Bureau of Rehabilitative Services for services for eligible students.
  • Support department with staffing shortages, IEP paperwork needs and scheduling needs.
  • Organize student and caseload needs when staffing shortages occur.
  • Implement and plan additional classes to support teaching shortages.
  • Create and deliver professional development for all staff as needed and when requested.
  • Support building administrators with various administrative duties.
  • Ensure that case managers check created lists for accuracy.
  • Substitute in self-contained classrooms when needed.
  • Create documents and templates that assist CMs with their data collection.
  • Collect resource needs for classes each year to provide to other department chairs for ordering.
  • Management of PPT meetings/Google calendar invites.

Qualification requirements include:

  • Masters degree.
  • Valid Connecticut teaching certificate.
  • Connecticut department chair or administrative certificate preferred.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write memos, reports and correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, staff, parents and the general public.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Basic knowledge and experience with standard hardware and software applications.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.
  • Ability to apply knowledge of current research and teaching competencies to instructional programs.
  • Ability to plan and implement lessons based on school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with students, peers and parents.
  • Skill in oral and written communication.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies and the code of professional responsibility for teachers.

Physical demands include:

  • Frequently required to stand and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to push or lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required include close vision.
  • The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff.

Work environment is moderate to loud, duties performed indoors and occasionally outdoors.
