POSITION TITLE

City Wide Resource Para educator

DEPARTMENT

Bristol Central High School

REPORTS TO

Special Education Teacher

SUMMARY

Assist in small group and individual pupil instruction.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Assist students with instruction under the direction of the special education teacher.
  • Assist teacher in maintaining discipline.
  • Assist teacher with instructional activities.
  • Escort students from room to room.
  • Toileting students is sometimes required.
  • Involves work with both special education and regular students.
  • Assist teaching staff in the implementation of IEP.
  • Supervise students while they are at recess and lunch.
  • Assist students with classroom assignments.
  • Copy materials for instructional purposes.
  • Assist teacher in filing material and preparing all necessary paperwork.
  • Alert teachers to problems that may be observed.
  • May require supporting with toileting of students.
  • PMT required.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

EDUCATION AND/OR

EXPERIENCE:

  • High School Diploma or General Education Degree.
  • Two years of college credit OR hold an associate's (or higher) degree; OR successful completion of a paraprofessional assessment which assesses content knowledge in mathematics, reading and writing and an understanding of how to assist in the instruction of these topics (Parapro Assessment).

LANGUAGE

SKILLS:

  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations.

MATHEMATICAL

SKILLS:

  • Ability to add and subtract two-digit numbers and to multiply and divide with 10s and 100s.
  • Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.

COMPUTER

SKILLS:

  • Basic knowledge and experience with job related computer hardware and software applications.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

OTHER

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community.
  • Ability to perform duties with awareness of district requirements and Board of Education policies.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
  • Regularly required to sit, talk or hear, stand, walk, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
  • Must be able to push items of fifty (50) pounds, such as pushing children on a bike or wheelchair or moving/rearranging furniture; occasionally lift up to fifty (50) pounds.
  • When doing heavier lifting, employee should do so with assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required: close vision, distance vision and peripheral vision.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Typical classroom noise level with school children, standard acceptable level.
  • Employee will work throughout the school building, on school grounds and occasionally off campus.
  • Paraprofessional responsible for the safety and well being of students in his/her charge.
