Bristol Public Schools has partnered with ESS to manage the substitute program. ESS will be responsible for the hiring, training, and placement of all daily and long-term substitute teachers and paraprofessional substitutes. ESS website at or call for more information.

Responsibilities- Provide regular class plans and perform duties when the assigned teacher is absent.
- Instruct the class and maintain classroom management in the absence of the regular teacher.
- Prepare lesson plans when not provided by the absent teacher; maintain appropriate records including tests, quizzes, grades, and related clerical tasks.
- Supervise the classroom and students; collaborate with volunteers and parent helpers where appropriate.
- Education and/or
Experience:
Bachelor’s Degree (Associate degree or two years of college acceptable in some situations; teaching certification desirable). - Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: Valid Connecticut Teaching Certificate desirable.
- Language
Skills:
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret periodicals and procedures; ability to write memos, reports, and correspondence; ability to present information clearly to groups. - Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to perform basic math, interpret graphs, and understand rates, ratios, and percentages. - Computer
Skills:
Proficiency with standard hardware and software; ability to use email, word processing, databases, and presentations. - Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and interpret written, oral, diagram or schedule instructions.
- Other
Skills and Abilities:
Plan and implement lessons aligned with school objectives; establish effective relationships with students, peers, and parents; strong oral and written communication; awareness of district requirements and policies.
- Physical Demands: Stand, talk, hear, walk, and sit as required; may lift up to 50 pounds; close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
- Work Environment: Indoor environment with moderate to loud noise; occasional outdoor work; accommodations available for individuals with disabilities.
